Oxford Hills stops Lawrence in Class A North semifinals

...The Bulldogs scored their lone run in the second. Haley Holt looped a triple into deep right, then came home two batters later on Gretta Knowlton's RBI single to shallow left-center.

"I kind of just brushed it off," Merrill said of Holt's three-bagger. "She's a good hitter, and I left that a little over the plate, and I just knew I needed to hit my spots more."

Lawrence never got a batter past second base again.

"She's been really good at being able to coming back and whatever that comes next, just moving on to what comes next," Oxford Hills coach Cindy Goddard said.

Cinderella run ends for No. 10 Bulldogs

...Two flare singles set the stage for a pair of Lawrence errors in the crucial fourth inning, helping Oxford Hills (13-5) erase an early 1-0 deficit. Bulldog senior Lilly Herrin tried to right the ship, striking out 11 batters and holding Oxford Hills to just five hits and give her team a chance at a comeback late.

“She was the real deal, no question about that, all season long,” Lawrence coach Joey Marcoux said. “She really showed up the last three games for us and tried to put the team on her back.”

Maturation of Merrill a key for Oxford Hills

...Freshman Lauren Merrill had big shoes to fill with the departure of Cody Akers and Ericka Whitman, but Merrill has pitched well enough for the Vikings to take the next step in the postseason.

"Definitely every game I think I felt pressure," Merrill said after the Vikings' win over Lawrence in this year's regional semifinals. "But this one, I was a little more relaxed — still really nervous, but my teammates definitely helped me."

Part of Merrill's relaxation can be attributed to growing up as the season has gone along. It's a campaign that saw the Vikings go 11-5 during the regular season, good enough for the No. 3 seed in the Class A North tournament.

The more things change for Skowhegan softball team, the more they stay the same
It's a different story this year as Indians prep for 2nd straight appearance in Class A North final.

..“Playoffs is all about confidence,” Johnson said. “It’s really about believing in yourself and knowing that you belong. Them making that run last year proved to them that they deserved that opportunity.

“We know Oxford Hills is a good team and that they’re talented. We know it’s going to be a dogfight. But these kids believe in themselves and each other, and they believe that they belong in that (regional championship) game.”

Sophomore right fielder Alyssa Everett was a junior varsity player for most of her freshman season. She’s part of several position players for the Indians this season who are either playing regularly for the first time or growing into a new position this season.

Skowhegan edges Oxford Hills for ‘A’ North softball title

... Despite having errors piling up, the Vikings were able to take the lead again in the top of the fifth. Merrill and Day sandwiched singles around an error that Kenney reached on to start the frame. Day’s single inside the third-base line brought home two runs.

“I think we did the things that we needed to do offensively,” Goddard said. “The first couple innings (Alward) was really striking us out, and then we kind of made the adjustment. Took them awhile not to go after the riseball, even though we’ve told them all three games don’t go after riseball.

“They’ve been in the situations where they’ve been down this year and they just keep battling, and that’s what they did today. They kept battling and battling.”

Oxford Hills falls to Skowhegan in A North softball final

AUGUSTA — Skowhegan will be making its fourth appearance in the Class A softball state championship in five years, but Indians coach Lee Johnson said he's learned in the past half decade that winning the regional final is never easy.

It certainly wasn't Wednesday night.

The Indians' second straight regional championship came after a battle with Oxford Hills, which pushed Skowhegan for seven innings before falling 5-4 in the Class A North final at Cony Family Field.

"It's always exciting to win a regional championship, but this was definitely an interesting one," Johnson said. "It went back and forth many times.

"They fought us hard all day long."

Skowhegan rallies late to sink Oxford Hills in A North softball title game
Indians are in state title game for a second consecutive season.

..Alyssa Everett, hitting out of the No. 9 hole, scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning, leading top-seeded Skowhegan over No. 3 Oxford Hills, 5-4, at Cony High School Wednesday night.

The game was sloppy and riddled with mistakes, with the Vikings committing eight errors and the Indians making four. But Skowhegan coach Lee Johnson wasn’t about to quibble about such details afterward, and neither were the players celebrating and embracing each other around him.

“It feels great to come out and get the win,” starting pitcher Ashley Alward said. “It was definitely a battle. They made us work. We definitely didn’t play our best game, but hopefully that will come on Saturday.”

Scarborough earns spot in state title game

STANDISH — It was the darndest thing.

Scarborough’s Sam Carreiro hit the ball about five inches during the first inning of the Class A South softball championship game.

The ball should have either gone foul or been an easy third out at first base.

Instead, it spun as if it had a life of its own and avoided Portland catcher Elaina Legere. Carreiro not only made it to first, but Chloe Griffin slid home safely for the first run of the game.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Scarborough coach Tom Griffin said. “That thing looked like a top spinning. It was amazing.

Scarborough rides fast start to regional softball title
The Red Storm defeat Portland 8-3 to capture Class A South.

...“I’ve got to say this is amazing,” said senior pitcher Abbie Murrell. “It really feels rewarding. We’ve worked so hard for the past four years. We’ve picked it up a couple of notches (this spring) and worked so hard.”

Since winning the Class A state championship in 2013, Scarborough has lost in a regional final, a state championship game and last year another regional game.

This year, said Coach Tom Griffin, “We really felt all year that there was some separation between us and the rest of the league, and I think we proved that. Now we have to go out and finish it.”

Portland's magical season comes to end against Scarborough

Portland’s softball team’s finest season since 2004 finally came to a close Wednesday evening at St. Joseph’s College in Standish when the Bulldogs met up with an unbeatable foe that went on to win state championship.

Portland, which lost to Scarborough in last year’s quarterfinal round, exceeded all expectations this season, building upon a strong 2016 campaign with sensational results.

The Bulldogs went 14-2 in the regular season, losing only at Scarborough and at home to Windham, to post its best record since 2001.
