Bangor softball team edges Lewiston to reach semifinals

...“We hadn’t really seen a lefty all year,” said Lewiston junior catcher Meagan Gosselin. “That was a benefit on their side. She had a good changeup. She got us on the corner a lot. It was a lot harder to read.”

“She kept it on the outside so we had to extend (our arms),” said Lewiston junior right-hander Megan Theriault, who also pitched a four-hit gem.

Theriault struck out five and walked two. She threw 74 pitches, 50 for strikes.

“My changeup was really working and and my rise was also working but they started getting on that,” said Theriault.

Skowhegan softball blanks Cony to reach A North semifinals
Ashley Alward throws a shutout as Indians keep rolling.

SKOWHEGAN — Neither Skowhegan pitcher Ashley Alward nor her coach, Lee Johnson, felt Alward had her best stuff in the circle during the Indians’ Class A North quarterfinal game against Cony on Thursday afternoon. It’s a good thing Alward’s B game is pretty good, too.

Alward allowed just one hit, and retired 14 of the Rams final 15 hitters, helping Skowhegan take a 5-0 win.

“I felt (Alward) competed very well today. That’s the biggest thing. I wouldn’t say she had her best stuff today, but what she had she worked very well with and commanded the zone,” Johnson said.

Windham catches Noble in last inning

...Whitney Wilson was Windham’s winning pitcher in relief of Tardiff who pitched 5 2/3 innings. Wilson was called in in the sixth. Aleva was thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning, and Wilson tossed a 1-2-3 seventh.

Chloe Wilcox led the Eagles, going 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Joy was 2 for 4. Erin Elder hit a three-run homer in the second that put Windham up 4-2.

“They just don’t quit,” said Windham coach Travis Demmons of Noble. “I told our girls we’ve got last ups. They walked off last night, maybe we can walk off tonight. It just so happened to work out.”

Trojans race past Mustangs 14-2 advance to Class A South semis
Sarah Casey gets six RBI with two home runs as Thornton Academy uses two six-run innings to put away Massabesic.

...And Casey, in the line-up as the designated player, proved she belonged. Casey hit two home runs and drove in six runs to lead the third-ranked Trojans to a 14-2 victory over No.6 Massabesic on Thursday afternoon in a Class A South quarterfinal. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning because of softball’s 12-run rule.

The Trojans scored six runs in each of the third and fourth innings, with Casey hitting a two-run home run and a grand slam. “Those were my first two home runs ever,” said Casey.

“She had a breakout game today,” said Provost. “That was just gut. She had really been having last three or four days tremendous (batting practice). We had nothing to lose.”

Skowhegan Roughs up Bangor to Return to Region Championship

Skowhegan comes up big against Bangor
Indians break out bats to reach A North final.

...“We had a lot of confidence today,” Johnson said. “I saw confidence really building. If you can jump on somebody like that, you get confidence, and we were a very confident team today. That’s what happens when you’re confident. It was a really good day for us.”

Ames was emblematic of an impressive performance from the Indians (16-2), who cruised to their 11th straight win dating exactly one month to the day. Led by Ames’ 3 for 4 performance with three runs scored and three more driven in, every member of the Skowhegan lineup produced in some fashion — with either a hit, a run scored or an RBI.

Of the 10 runners to reach base before the first out was recorded in an inning, nine of them eventually came around to score.

Portland parties like it's 2004, knocks off TA to reach regional final

PORTLAND—Portland’s softball team made tremendous strides in 2016, posting a winning record and capturing a playoff game for the first time in over a decade.

And looking back, that was only a warmup.

The 2017 Bulldogs have raised the bar dramatically and now find themselves two victories from reaching the pinnacle after an impressive victory Saturday morning at Payson Park.
