Lawrence softball comes up big in win over Messalonskee
Herrin, Lambert lead No. 10 Bulldogs past No. 7 Eagles in Class A North prelim.

...At least, that’s the way Lawrence head coach Joey Marcoux sees it.

“If we had lost to them that second time that we played them, I think it would have been a different story today,” said Marcoux, whose team will travel to Edward Little for a regional quarterfinal game Wednesday afternoon. “Mentally, these girls knew that they could win. So much of sports is mental and they had that confidence that they had the ability to win, they just had to go out and play.”

Herrin was thoroughly dominant Tuesday. She opened the day by setting down nine of the first 10 Eagles, and she wrapped things up by retiring 10 of the last 11 she faced to close out the game.

Oxford Hills runs by Brewer in A North softball quarterfinal

...They were really aggressive on the base paths today,” Brewer coach Skip Estes said. “That was the big difference in the game. We hadn’t had anyone run on us like that all year.”

That started in the bottom of the first inning with two outs. Starting pitcher Lauren Merrill reached first base with a single to right field. Brooke Carson was brought in as a courtesy runner for Merrill. Hannah Kenney kept the inning going as she beat the throw to first when it sailed over the first baseman’s head. Kenney moved to second while Carson kept running with no Brewer player watching her run the bases to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

“She was doing excellent on the base paths, heads-up on the base running,” Kenney said of Carson. “She [was] perfect.”

Lawrence upsets Edward Little in Class A North quarterfinal

..."I was watching. I thought she was going to catch it, and when I saw it getting to her glove I was taking that turn," Herrin said. "And as soon as I knew it hit the ground, usually in right field I can make it to (third). So I kept going ... and gave it some more hustle and got there."

Herrin then came home on a wild pitch to complete the scoring.

"They deserved to win this game," EL coach Elaine Derosby said. "They put the ball in play when they had to, they ran the bases when they had to, and they just made plays when they have to. We just, we didn't. And they forced us to make those mistakes."

Gorham eliminates Marshwood in Class A South
The Rams break out with six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 8-1 victory.

...Three of the RBI came in the fifth inning when Tracey drove a towering home run over the 12-foot fence in straightaway center field.

“When she makes contact, it’s solid contact,'” said Whipkey. “You don’t see many going out of dead center in Robie Field.”

That provided pitcher Grace McGouldrick with all the runs she would need. McGouldrick took a shutout into the final inning and struck out nine, allowing four hits and two walks.

Gorham (10-7) will play at top-ranked Scarborough (16-0) at 3 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals. The Red Storm defeated the Rams 15-1 on May 8.

Knights walk-off with wild playoff victory

...On the run as soon as the ball hit the bat, Raegan Kelly immediately broke for the plate, beating the throw home to score the game-winning run and complete the comeback. The 6-5 final sends the Knights on to play at No. 4 Windham in the Class A South quarterfinals today.

“I knew that if I just went up there and slammed it they would figure out how to get home,” Boucher said. “That’s just basically it. I knew I had to swing and hit it.”

A lot of things had to happen for Noble (12-5) to even get Boucher up to bat in that situation, not the least of which was Marisa Cipolla’s incredible effort on the base paths.
