Class A North softball title up for grabs

...“It’s amazing,” said 12-year Brewer coach Skip Estes. “I’ve never seen this (parity) in all the years I’ve been coaching.”

Five different schools have won the regional title over the last nine seasons, including four by Skowhegan. The Indians won it last year after going 9-7 during the regular season before amping it up in the playoffs and capturing the crown as the No. 6 seed.

Estes said one of the primary reasons the playoffs will be unpredictable is the fact, “nobody has a dominant pitcher. But there are some good pitchers. The girl from Mt. Ararat (senior Alana Weaver) is very, very good.”

Time to think playoffs; Spring season winds down-Portland edition

Softball
Portland’s softball team began the week 12-1 and second to powerhouse Scarborough in the Class A South Heals after winning at Marshwood (2-0) and Biddeford (8-4) and at home over Deering (7-2) last week. In the win over the Hawks, ace Jess Brown threw a five-hitter and doubled and scored the tie-breaking run in the sixth inning. Against the Tigers, Brown hit a bases-clearing double to open up a 5-1 lead, but gave up back-to-back home runs to make it a one-run game before Taylor Crosby hit a clutch RBI double and Kit Rosmus followed with a two-run single to provide some breathing room. Rosmus and Morgan Boyle had three hits and Brown went the distance.

“We’re resilient,” Brown said. “We’re generating more offense than we did last year. Our defense has been solid and our offense has come along.”

“We’re very confident in ourselves this year,” Crosby said. “We’ve had a similar team for a couple years. We know what we can do. We know how to win.”

Portland High softball standout Brown named Gatorade Player of the Year

It has been quite a season for Portland High ace pitcher Jess Brown, who has become the school’s first softball player to be named Maine's Gatorade Player of the Year.

“I didn't believe it at first,” Brown said. “I had to check it over a few times, and luckily didn't have a class when I first saw it. So then I called my parents first and they were just as shocked as I was, which was real awesome!"
The hard-throwing junior has led the Bulldogs to a 14-2 record and a first-round playoff bye, herself posting a 9-2 record courtesy of a 1.49 ERA and a whopping 113 strikeouts. Brown is also a big hit at the plate, currently leading the Bulldogs in hitting with a .451 batting average.

Twin Peaks: Pair of pitchers leads Skowhegan softball team
Alward and Ames have Indians entering Class A North playoffs as top seed.

...The Indians, one year after playing for the Class A state championship, enter the Class A North tournament this week as the top seed in the region with that exact scenario. Both Ashley Alward, a junior, and Sydney Ames, a sophomore, have split time in the circle almost down the middle this season, just as they did a year ago — and it’s hard to argue with the impressive results for a team that went 14-2 in the regular season and won the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship.

While most of the state’s top high school teams feature a single bonafide ace pitcher who shoulders virtually all of the load throughout the season, Skowhegan head coach Lee Johnson is in the unique position of having two pitchers who would be the No. 1 on just about any team.

Johnson admits that it has been harder on him than on either Alward or Ames, who both put the team’s success over any of their own individual accolades.
