Morse swats Spruce Mountain

... The Phoenix (2-4) also made a handful of errors, which undoubtedly helped Morse’s (6-2) cause. The Shipbuilders hammered out 18 hits, a total that included five doubles, two triples and a home run.

“We have been hitting all year long,” Morse coach Will Laffely said. “We have been averaging about nine runs a game or so. The only game we didn’t hit was I think Wednesday night against Gardiner.

“We only had six hits and two runs. Gardiner for the last two years has really done a number on us. We gave up six hits to Gardiner and gave up seven runs. We had 10 walks that game and we didn’t hit.”

Erskine softball drops another heartbreaker
Needing a victory to keep playoff hopes alive, Eagles fall short to Morse.

... A day after losing to once-beaten Gardiner in 13 innings, the Eagles lost their seventh game of the season by a single run to finish at 5-11. Morse is 12-4 and headed for the playoffs in Class B south.

“We have just one inning usually,” Erskine coach Holly Tripp said.

That inning came in the top of the seventh and spoiled an otherwise strong effort from sophomore pitcher Kayla Hodgkins. The ball never left the infield as the Shipbuilders scored twice on two infield hits, one a bunt, a walk and two errors.

“We’re really young this year,” senior catcher Taylor McLaggan said of the Eagles. “Standing here today it’s really hard to walk away.”
