Scarborough beats Gorham to improve to 7-0
Scarborough jumps from fifth to first in the Heal points standings by beating Gorham

... This was a good test for us,” said Scarborough Coach Tom Griffin, who has guided the Red Storm to four Class A state titles since 2007. “It was really encouraging to see us hit the ball as good as we did.”

After being retired in order in the first inning, the Red Storm scored seven runs in the second inning against Gorham starter Grace McGouldrick. Griffin felt facing a quality pitcher like McGouldrick (4-2), rather than a pitcher who struggles and walks a lot of batters, helped the Red Storm get into a rhythm.

“This was probably the best pitcher we’ve seen at this point,” Griffin said. “We responded well and it is really encouraging for our team.”

Scarborough leaves no doubt against Windham in showdown of unbeaten teams
Abbie Murrell drives in five runs and pitches the Red Storm to a 15-0 victory over the Eagles.

... “I’m just really pleased with the way my kids responded today. They were ready,” said Scarborough Coach Tom Griffin. “This was a good opportunity to see what we have.

“Basically we said we wanted to send a message here to everybody that this is what we have. And (his players) wanted to play the game hard, play it all-out and see what happens, try to win all phases of the game. We went out and dominated from the get-go.”

Scarborough (10-0) has pretty much dominated everyone this season, outscoring opponents 137-4. Windham (10-1) had scored 148 runs coming in.

Windham "sleepwalks" onto the diamond, falls hugely to Scarborough

...Both coaches remarked on the importance of defense.

“We always try to build from the defense out,” Griffin said. “If you’re going to be a State Championship team, that’s what it’s going to be in the long run. Games are going to tighten up into the playoffs; it’s not going to be these big blowouts. Usually, the defense is going to make the difference. We pride ourselves on our defense, and to the kids’ credit, they’ve been working really hard on the defensive end. It’s been pretty fun to work with these kids; they’re awesome.”

“Defense is huge,” Demmons said. “Pitching is obviously very important, but you’ve got to be able to field the ball and throw the ball. That’s what I tell anyone who comes to any clinic I’ve ever run. And I can’t say it enough: Scarborough executed, they put the screws to us, and our girls didn’t rise to the occasion today. Hopefully, we’ll get another crack at them and perform much better.”

Scarborough gets a test from Noble, but wins yet again

SCARBOROUGH—Scarborough’s powerhouse softball team finally got pushed Saturday morning.

And the Red Storm pushed back.

And as a result, Scarborough did what it always does in the regular season.

Win.

Hosting a feisty Noble squad that wasn’t intimidated by its mighty foe, the Red Storm appeared destined for another lopsided victory when senior pitcher Lilly Volk crushed a three-run home run in the bottom of the first, but the Knights came back with a vengeance.
