Portland caps challenging week by holding off SP

... PORTLAND—Portland’s softball team entered the week not completely sure of its identity.

Four days later, the Bulldogs have confirmed what they suspected all along.

They’re pretty darn good.

Thursday afternoon at Payson Park, Portland, three days removed from a historic win at Thornton Academy and 24 hours removed from playing perennial powerhouse Scarborough close for half the game, hosted South Portland, a team that even if its record hasn’t shown it, is dangerous and on the rise.

Huge first inning propels Portland past Deering

PORTLAND—Portland’s softball program has made the leap from being up-and-coming to top contender status.

Deering is still working its way back into contention.

Wednesday evening at Payson Park, the ancient rivals did battle for the first of two times this spring and one inning, bountiful for the Bulldogs and interminable for the Rams, went a long way toward determining the winner.

...It was the third consecutive win for the Bulldogs (8-1), who trail only unbeaten Scarborough in the Class A South Heal point standings.

“We’ve been playing with so much confidence,” Coach Robbie Ferrante said. “The kids have just been playing real hard. They just want to get better.”

Play was halted after 4½ innings because of the 12-run mercy rule.

“It was a tough start for us,” Deering Coach John Coyne said.

Portland meets challenges, extends streak to six with win at defending champs

BIDDEFORD—A year ago, Portland’s softball team learned how to win.

This spring, the Bulldogs have gotten to the point where they believe that they can win by any means necessary anytime they take the field and Wednesday afternoon, under sizzling skies at Doran Field, playing defending Class A state champion Biddeford, Portland once again overcame a stern challenge and triumphed.

Thanks to, once again, a full team effort.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when senior shortstop Morgan Boyle delivered a two-run single with two outs. After the Tigers got a run in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single from sophomore rightfielder Taylor Wildes, Portland appeared to seize control in the fourth, when junior starting pitcher Jess Brown cleared the bases with a two-out, bases loaded double.

Portland heeds lesson, dispatches different batch of Rams

PORTLAND—Last Friday evening, Portland showed up at Payson Park and expected to go through the motions and beat rival Deering.

Five innings later, the Bulldogs were fighting for their life.

Portland managed to pull away and win that game over the Rams, 7-2, but in the process, the Bulldogs learned the valuable lesson that even though they’re in the midst of their best season in over a decade, they can take no foe for granted.
