... “It’s always a good game when we come up here,” said the hard-throwing Alward, who struck out 10 and didn’t walk anybody while pitching out of several jams.

She threw 124 pitches, 78 for strikes.

“[Alward] was definitely really good,” said Brewer sophomore catcher Jordan Goodrich. “She had a lot of movement on her ball. She was hard to hit but we handled it pretty well.”

“I tried to make good pitches when I had to,” said Alward.

Sophomore right fielder Alyssa Everett bailed her out of a big jam in the sixth.

Pitching duo spearheading Skowhegan’s title defense

... Over the past four seasons, Skowhegan boasts an impressive 10-3 record in post-season play.

Even though this year’s Skowhegan team has had to replace four starters, two of the primary architects behind the Indians’ success a year ago are back in pitchers Ashley Alward and Sydney Ames.

“They are two quality pitchers,” said Skowhegan head coach Lee Johnson.

Alward, a junior, is off to a 2-0 start while sophomore Ames is 1-1 with her only loss being a 3-1 setback to Edward Little.

Skowhegan softball pulls out dramatic win over Lewiston
Indians score in bottom of the 7th for KVAC A victory.

...“That’s what you hope for,” Johnson said. “You want a little production all the way down through. You want to have some depth to your lineup, and that’s what we had today.”

The Indians are the defending A North champs but their is parity in the division again — 13 of the 14 KVAC A teams have at least two losses, meaning every game from here on out has the potential to be tight.

“We gave ourselves a chance in the end,” Johnson said. “That’s a good team over there, both kids threw well and the defenses played well. It just came down to one timely hit that a team got. That’s kind of seems to be the trend throughout the year — whichever team comes up with the timely hit comes up with the win.”

Skowhegan puts Mt. Blue on hold

...A rough first inning opened the door of opportunity for Skowhegan, which finished the season at an impressive 14-2. The Indians took a five-run lead with the help of the four errors and an RBI single by Julia Steeves.

“It seems that’s happened all year,” Mt. Blue coach Ron Smiths said. “It’s been five innings of great ball and then one or two innings of giving up a bundle (of runs).

“We have a spell. We have one or two innings every game. It has happened all year and it doesn’t seem to be an answer to it. A whole of ton of unearned runs this year. The pitchers threw great. We just didn’t play defense.
