Oceanside offense, pitching shines in five-inning win over Lions
Jones tosses one-hitter, strong hitting leads visitors past Belfast

BELFAST — It would be hard for Oceanside sophomore pitcher Chloe Jones to pitch better than she has in her last two games — including, most recently, the Mariners' Tuesday, April 25 road high school softball contest at Belfast.

After twirling a no-hitter against Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield on Monday, April 24, Jones followed that performance with a one-hit shutout — with her Mariner teammates adding plenty of offensive firepower — in a 13-0, 5-inning victory just about 24 hours later.

Oceanside softball coach teaches life lessons in both jobs

... “You are teaching life lessons in both. I have become a coach at work. I coach the offenders and help them help themselves,” said Worcester. “We are helping them get back into society (after serving their sentences). We are preparing them to be successful and not be a repeat offender.”

His hope is that they can land a job, take classes or a get involved in a work-release program.

Worcester’s teams have won three state championships, two Class C crowns at Georges Valley (2007 and 2008) and one in Class B with Oceanside (2013).

What he tells his players is to be relentless and determined. Sports can be a valuable springboard in life.

“If you have played a sport at a high level and you’re going on a job interview, you shouldn’t take a back seat to anyone. Go get the job!” said Worcester.

Revenge factor: Mariners plate late run to knock off rival Panthers
Mazurek's solo home run in seventh inning proves difference in 3-2 triumph

WALDOBORO — Oceanside senior Alexis Mazurek — along with her teammates — still had a bad taste in their mouths after falling to Midcoast-rival Medomak Valley to begin the spring campaign.

Needless to say, after the highly-anticipated rematch between the talented Midcoast squads — with valuable Heal Points in the balance — the Mariners delivered a bit of payback to the Panthers, and did so in dramatic fashion.

Mazurek belted a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie — and sophomore pitcher Chloe Jones sent the Panthers down in order in the bottom of the final frame — as the visitors edged Medomak Valley 3-2 on Wednesday, May 24 in yet another classic showdown between the almost always evenly-matched teams.

Oceanside’s quick start too much for Winslow softball
Chloe Jones fans 11 to lead Mariners to KVAC B win.

...“She’s been very dominant all season,” Oceanside coach Russ Worcester said of Jones. “She’s really been able to locate her fastball. Velocity-wise, she throws hard but when she’s able to spot her off-speed pitches it makes her even more difficult to hit.”

Jones didn’t need much support from her offense, which scratched out single runs in the first and second innings before adding a pair in the third.

She retired 10 of the first 11 Black Raiders she faced, working around a two-out walk in the second inning and not allowing another baserunner until Bailey Robbins (2 for 3) reached on an infield single in the fourth.
