Gardiner shuts down Leavitt

GARDINER — The Gardiner Tigers plated fives runs behind timely hitting and some defensive miscues by Leavitt en route to a 5-0 victory in the teams' KVAC softball season opener Wednesday afternoon.

Despite spending no time on a field thus far this spring, both teams battled the cool temperatures and played a solid game both at bat and in the field.

Gardiner struck first in the second inning, starting with a leadoff walk from Kylie Sirois. Following a strikeout from Leavitt's Abby Robertson, the Tigers strung together three base hits, including an RBI knock from first baseman Brooke Somes.

Gardiner softball turns in complete effort
Tigers pounce on Medomak early, cruise to big victory.

... I think they dug a hole they couldn’t get back from.” Nadeau said.

Haley Brann followed Meehan with a double to left, putting runners on second and third. Both runners scored on safety bunts from Bisson and Logan Granholm. Nadeau singled and scored on Sydney Bartunek’s infield hit.

“That was (our) best game of the season,” Gardiner coach Don Brochu. “We’re gaining.”

Gardiner softball rallies for win over Winslow
The Tigers score 7 runs in the 7th inning to pick up big victory.

..Today we really showed it with our hitting when we needed to,” freshman second baseman Haley Brann said. “If you need the runs, then you need to get them.”

The Tigers got the runs they needed in the top of the seventh inning, and tacked on a few more for good measure. Gardiner turned four hits and four Winslow errors into eight runs in the inning to take an important Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference win, 11-7.

The win improved Gardiner to 12-1, and widened its Heal point lead in Class B South over second-place Medomak Valley. Winslow is now 7-3.

Gardiner softball cools off hot Maranacook
Tigers passing expectations with another run, stay atop Class B North.

...So far the Tigers have exceeded expectations.

Monday they defeated a hot Maranacook team 12-0, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to invoke the mercy rule.

Gardiner improved to 13-1 and sits in first place in the Class B North standings while Maranacook fell to 8-4 in Class B South.

“Mostly they were all freshmen, now they’re sophomores,” Gardiner coach Don Brochu said. “We’re gaining a little one step at a time.”
