SJ: It's Richmond and the rest in Class D South

The beginning of the season, particularly in softball, is that hope springs eternal.

The Bobcats are the four-time defending Class D state champs and enter the season on a 70-game winning streak. Oh, and according to the other coaches in the region, they're the team to beat once again.

"I think it's all dominated by Richmond," Rangeley coach Chip Smith said. "I think it's pretty much a foregone conclusion to most of us, it's just trying to compete and win the games that are at hand. Richmond's just on a total different echelon than all the other schools in Class D South."

SJ: Who's the favorite in Class A North?

...It's hard to pin-point the favorite to win the region this year, if only because it depends on which coach you ask. And even then any given coach may point to a handful of teams.

"I would expect Messalonskee, Skowhegan, EL, Lewiston, Cony and Bangor (are the favorites)," Oxford Hills coach Cindy Goddard said. "The league is going to be very competitive this year, which is going to make it a fun spring."

"I know Messalonskee lost a lot, but ... they'll be all right. Skowhegan was a sixth seed and made it to the state championship. You don't look past them. And you never look past Brewer or Bangor, or EL," Lewiston coach Mike Child said. "I think the whole thing is pretty much up in the air. I mean, anybody, I guess, could take over, take it. I'd say it was wide open. I'd say EL is going to be pretty good, Oxford Hills is going to be good."

SJ: Local teams look to catch up to Madison in class C South

As far as the other coaches in Class C South are concerned, the softball factory at Madison is still churning out a contender.

The Bulldogs have been the No. 1 seed in the region each of the past five years, and have won the region three of those times, winning two state titles, including last year.

It could be six straight top seeds this year, unless one of the handful of promising teams in the region can find a way to knock the Bulldogs off that perch.

"They're always going to be good," Monmouth co-coach Dave Kaplan said.

It's Coach and Co. for local teams

When the Poland head softball coach position opened up this year, former assistant coach Kayla Vannah really wanted the job.

The only problem was that her day job — an elementary school teacher in Windham — prevented her from being able to fully commit to the position. It was the reason she didn't go for the job when it was open last year, but she didn't want to let the opportunity slip a second time.

So she had to get creative.

That meant getting a second head coach to join her. So in came Katrina Seeley, a former Poland player and a teacher at the school.
