Scarborough's stirring rally falls one goal short in state final

...PORTLAND—Scarborough’s girls’ soccer team wasn’t able to take home a Gold Ball Saturday afternoon from the Class A state final at Deering High School’s Memorial Field, but the Red Storm earned tremendous respect for their resilience and refusal to give up in the face of a superbly talented foe and a seemingly insurmountable deficit.

Battling defending champion Camden Hills in a showdown between undefeated squads, Scarborough found itself in a most unfamiliar spot, trailing, when the Windjammers got a goal from junior Kassie Krul in the 14th minute.

If that wasn’t daunting enough, what happened early in the second half was even more demoralizing.

With 34:16 to go in regulation, Camden Hills sophomore Kristina Kelly, who already holds the program record for goals, finished for a two-goal lead and five minutes later, Krul finished a free kick to seemingly ice another title.

Camden Hills defends Class A girls soccer state title

...“[No.] 10 (Krul) and 2 (Kelly) are world-class players,” said Scarborough coach Mike Farley. “We knew it coming in and we tried to stop them but they still scored. Their best players really stood out and made the difference in the game.”

“It was a battle. We had completely different styles,” said Krul. “We’re a possession team and they play in the air. They kick it up the field and jump up high in the air. They were difficult to play against but we did a good job possessing the ball.”

Krul opened the scoring in the physical affair with 26:13 left in the first half.

Kelly made a run down the right flank and passed it over to Eliza Roy, who quickly slid it to Krul at the top of the penalty area. She beat standout Red Storm goalkeeper Emily Royce with a well-placed, left-footed shot.

“I got the ball, saw the corner and tried to place it,” said Krul. “During the regular season, I had been kicking it instead of focusing and placing it.”

Camden Hills outlasts Scarborough in A girls' soccer final

...Five minutes after, a foul was called on Scarborough and the left-footed Krul stood over the ball from 25 yards away. Her shot went in the top corner on the far side, over the arm of the keeper and in for a three-goal lead.

“We have been working on direct kicks all year but I honestly wasn’t expecting that,” Kirk said. “I tried to listen to what my coach (Josh Mahar) said about getting flat on it so that you can really curve it and flick it in.”

Camden Hills head coach Meredith Messer expected nothing less of her forward.

“Great players make great moments and they have them for a reason,” Messer said. “She’s practiced that and worked hard at those dead balls, and also keeping her composure… all those little things that great players make it look easy.”

Scarborough coach Mike Farley knew that the two early goals in the second half were the daggers that would end their season.

Repeat after me: Windjammers weather Red Storm for second straight state crown
Kassie Krul nets two goals, Kelly one to help guide unbeaten Camden Hills to back-to-back titles

...The Windjammers — as it turned out — would need every one of those three early goals as the Red Storm surged back late and did all they could to apply as much watery turbulence as possible against the Windjammers.

In the end, however, Camden Hills showed the heart of a champion for the second straight year as it fended off a furious final seven minutes by Scarborough and held on for an exciting 3-2 victory — and its second straight Class A crown.

The win also wrapped an unbeaten campaign for Camden Hills, which, in addition to its Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A championship victory, finished the year with an unblemished 18-0-1 record.
