Scarborough girls ride fast start to key win over Cheverus

SCARBOROUGH—After each goal scored by the Scarborough girls’ soccer team, the public address announcer plays a recording of lightning and thunder.

The Cheverus Stags heard more of those sound effects than they would have liked before Saturday afternoon’s game at the Kippy Mitchell Sports Complex was four minutes old, as the undefeated Red Storm scored twice to open up a commanding lead.

Scarborough needed just 84 seconds to go on top to stay, as junior Sophia Martens placed a free kick in the just the right spot to score the game’s first goal.

Scarborough rises to the challenge
The Red Storm use an early blitz to keep their perfect record intact and end Cheverus' nine-game winning streak.

...“The first five minutes, we (had) a couple young players in a big situation and they knew it,” Cheverus Coach Craig Roberts said. “There were some nerves there at the start.

“(The girls) knew the magnitude of the game. I think we probably were playing for first place (in Class A South) … they have high expectations and they want to, and know, they can compete with Scarborough. I think that played into it as well.”

The Stags regrouped and started to get pressure on Red Storm keeper Emily Royce (four saves) in the middle of the first half, as Emma Gallant and Lauren Jordan had quality shots.
