Cheverus solves Portland behind Gallant's heroics

PORTLAND—Speed kills.

And speed combined with a dazzling finishing touch makes life miserable for the opposition.

Cheverus’ girls’ soccer team boasts a player whose speed is unmatched and whose ability to put the ball in the goal makes her a nightmare.

Just ask rival Portland.

The Bulldogs had no answer for Stags sophomore Emma Gallant Monday afternoon at Boulos Stadium, as Gallant scored after an impressive run in the game’s 27th minute, then buried a free kick with pinpoint precision in the 36th.

Cheverus girls take battle of once-beatens against Bonny Eagle

PORTLAND—Cheverus’ girls’ soccer team hasn’t had to overcome much adversity in recent games, but Wednesday afternoon at Boulos Stadium, the Stags ran into a red-hot squad from Bonny Eagle and had a goal taken away in the first half.

For many teams, that would start a spiral that would end in defeat, but Cheverus kept its head up and was rewarded with yet another victory.

Less than two minutes after an apparent brilliant tally from sophomore Emma Gallant was taken away because her indirect kick wasn’t touched before finding the net, classmate Lauren Jordan pounced on a loose ball in the box and buried it for a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.

Cheverus shuts out Bonny Eagle
The Stags stretch their winning streak to seven with a 2-0 victory.

...Cheverus (7-1), which has won seven in a row after a season-opening loss to Kennebunk, got its first goal midway through the first half. Bonny Eagle keeper Sydney Gillingham came out to play a rolling ball and went into a slide, but the ball got away and Jordan booted into the open net.

“I figured that something weird was going to happen, and you always have to be on the end of those. I was there,” said Jordan.

“We’re patient, we don’t panic. When you’re persistent like that, good things will happen,” said Cheverus Coach Craig Roberts.

Gallant had a goal rescinded less than two minutes earlier after she appeared to score off a direct kick.
