Windham slips past tough South Portland

WINDHAM–The Lady Eagles – Julia McKenna and Hannah Kaplan propelling them forward with a goal apiece – dashed 2-0 past the visiting Red Riots on Saturday morning, Sept. 2. To their great credit, though, South Portland looked strong, and battled the top-flight Windhamites admirably.

“I would say we did get very lucky,” Windham head coach Deb Lebel said. “[South Portland], in the first half, outplayed us. They probably had more shots than us in the first half…We need to clean things up, defensively.”

Despite controlling much of the uphill 40 minutes, South Portland, a program on the rise by any measure, couldn’t get on the board. The Riots crossbarred a number of balls – Hattie Tetzlaff, for instance, rang one with 1:35 to play before the break – but simply couldn’t billow the net.

Windham’s persistence pays off in win over Deering
The Eagles use a relentless attack to earn a 3-1 victory, bouncing back from their first loss of the season.

...“We came off a loss where we felt like we didn’t really execute,” said Windham Coach Deb Lebel. “Tonight, they knew they needed to step up. It started with our midfielders and defenders winning a lot of balls, so (Deering) couldn’t really get going the other way. We felt that pressure last game and we knew we needed to fix that.”

Windham (3-1) came out in attack mode, and it took the Eagles less than four minutes to cash in. Maggie Symonds, a senior, scored off a pass from classmate Hannah Kaplan 3:50 into the game.

The Eagles continued to pepper the net but were repeatedly denied by sophomore keeper Gianna Charest. The first-year varsity player made 15 saves while surrendering a pair of goals in the first half.
