Yarmouth girls impress with early season shutout of Greely

CUMBERLAND—Graduation has taken its toll, there are new faces in new places and a new coaching staff is in place, but despite it all, early in the 2017 season, the Yarmouth girls’ soccer team still looks like the team to beat in Class B.

Tuesday evening at Glenn A. Hutchins Field, the Clippers visited rival Greely and put on a display of scoring balance and finishing skill that the hosts couldn’t match.

After a few close calls, Yarmouth got the only goal it would need midway through the first half, as senior Ellie Purgavie finished after a nice individual effort.

Yarmouth shuts out Greely in a key rematch
The Clippers win 4-0 in a rematch of last year's Class B South regional final.

...“They know they’re the team to beat this year, and they’re going to work twice as hard to make sure they’re not a one-hit wonder,” said Coach Chris Coleman, who took over when Josh Thornton left to become the assistant men’s soccer coach at Bates College after one season with the Clippers.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but this is an extremely talented group, one of the most talented teams I’ve worked with,” said the 26-year-old Coleman, a native of Liverpool, England, who is on the staff of the Portland-based Global Soccer Phoenix. “They want to improve and they take nothing for granted.”

The Clippers (2-0) dominated play during the first half in taking a 2-0 lead.

Yarmouth girls jump on Cape early, roll to emphatic victory

YARMOUTH—Yarmouth’s defending Class B state champion girls’ soccer team was supposed to get its biggest test to date Friday evening when it hosted red-hot Cape Elizabeth.

But if the Capers’ success in trying to slow down the Clippers was any indication, you might as well go ahead and crown them again.

Yarmouth senior standout Sara D’Appolonia, who is in the process of rewriting the record books, produced the only goal her team would need in the 10th minute, when she finished a pretty feed from classmate Hannah Corey.
