Ashland girls shut out Central Aroostook

MARS HILL, Maine — The Central Aroostook Panthers are considered by many as one of the top girls soccer teams in Class D North. Unfortunately for them, they play in the same division and meet up twice a year with Ashland — the defending state champion.

Ashland made the trip south Wednesday and controlled the match, scoring two goals on set plays in the first half, adding an insurance tally after intermission and stifling the offensive attack of the Panthers en route to a 3-0 victory.

The Hornets improved to 2-0, while handing Central Aroostook (2-1) its first defeat.

State champion soccer team Ashland loses all-time leading scorer to injury

If Ashland High School is going to repeat as Class D girls soccer state champion, it will have to overcome the loss of the program’s all-time leading scorer.

Mackenzie Carter sustained a season-ending knee injury while playing for her club team, Seacoast United, this summer. She underwent surgery to repair her anterior cruciate ligament, according to head coach Peter Belskis.

Carter had scored 112 career goals, including 52 a year ago.
