States: Class A Camden Hills vs. Gorham, 3 p.m.

Speedy freshman’s shift to striker helps lead Camden Hills to state championship game

... The result has been dramatic.

Kelly helped lead the Windjammers to their first berth in a state championship game by scoring a team-high 32 goals. Her dazzling run down the left wing and impressive 7-yard shot tied defending state champs Bangor 2-2 with 3:49 left in their Class A North final on Wednesday night. She also had a hand in the game-winning goal scored by Izzy Gutheinz 39 seconds later by making a pass to Kassie Krul, who then passed it over to Gutheinz.

Camden Hills, 16-1, will take on Gorham, 16-0-1, in the state championship at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Camden Hills girls to compete for first state soccer title
The Windjammers meet Gorham in one of the eight soccer championship games Saturday.

... But Gorham (16-0-1) is no stranger to this stage. Coach Jeanne Zarrilli has led the Rams to six state finals over her 13 years with the program. But the southern Maine powerhasn’t won a state title since 2007, when the Rams capped off a three-year stretch of taking home the Gold Ball.

“I’ve been there before but the girls haven’t,” Zarrilli said. “You really just try to take it one game at a time.”

Neither team is familiar with its opponent; Gorham and Camden Hills never have met.

Messer’s OT goal lifts Camden Hills to ‘A’ girls crown

... “Shoot it, that was going through my head,” Messer said. “After, it was a different thought. It was kind of, ‘Oh my Lord, did that just happen?'”

Messer was indeed happy for herself and for her teammates, but also especially for her mother, Meredith Messer, the team’s coach.

Meredith, meanwhile, is elated to see the players she’s been coaching for many years achieve this level of success.

“It’s really special because my daughter is on the team,” Meredith Messer said. “I’ve had these girls since the U9 (level). That makes it even sweeter. I am just proud for them.”

Camden Hills nets first state championship with 1-0 OT win over Gorham
Messer tallies deciding goal, ties school mark, Windjammers pull out dramatic victory

... Saturday’s state final also marked the first time all season the Windjammers have been held scoreless for 80 minutes.

“Barely through 30 [minutes],” said coach Meredith Messer. “They handle balls that most kids at high school level can’t. Number 17 Narissa Libby is a fantastic player and their keeper Emma Smith made two of the best saves I’ve seen all year. They did their job too. It’s hard to see somebody lose in a game like this because they both played so well.”

“We knew they were really physical and we never underestimate a team, especially in playoffs,” said Kaylyn Krul. “You never know what can happen. It’s soccer and things can go either way, so we just came as hard as we could.”

Camden Hills came out on the offensive Saturday and dictated play throughout the first half, nearly finishing early goals off headers by Charlotte Messer and Anderson.
