Bangor fullback to join UMaine women’s soccer program

BANGOR — Standout Bangor High School left back Lauren Young, who returned to play a couple of games in October after breaking the tibia and fibula in her right leg on July 21, will continue her soccer career at the University of Maine in the fall.

Young announced her decision on Wednesday at the school.

“It’s very exciting to be able to play so close to home and at the highest level I can,” said Young, a tenacious and tireless defender who was a three-year starter.

Young won’t be a scholarship player initially, but she can earn scholarship money if she is able to crack the lineup.

Under NCAA regulations, UMaine head coach Scott Atherley can’t comment at this time.

Monmouth's Emily Grandahl to sign with Merrimack soccer.

Postby Tom Nolette » Thu Feb 08, 2018 2:50 am

Area athletes decide on college plans
Skowhegan receiver Jon Bell commits to Maine; Emily Grandahl to sign with Merrimack soccer.

... In Merrimack, Grandahl is joining a program that could be on the verge of a big transition. Merrimack is considering moving all sports to Division I, where its ice hockey teams currently compete.

“Coach (Gabe Mejail) told all us recruits they’re looking to go to Division I in the next couple of years, so we’d be a part of that,” Grandahl said.

At Monmouth, Grandahl has played a number of positions, and last season helped lead the Mustangs to the regional championship game. Now, she’s focused on playing center back as she plays for the Seacoast United soccer club.

Grandahl picks Merrimack

Emily Grandahl, a senior at Monmouth Academy, signed her National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Merrimack College, a Division II soccer program in the NorthEast-10 Conference. Emily was a four year starter at Monmouth Academy, where she helped them reach the playoffs four consecutive years, including two appearances in the Regional Finals. She is a two-time All-State selection, as well as 1st team All-MVC.

SP's Selser commits to U. Mass-Lowell

Selser commits to U. Mass-Lowell

South Portland senior Juliana Selser, joined by her parents, Jeff and Julie, sister, Evelyn, and many teammates, beams after signing her National Letter of Intent Thursday to attend and play soccer at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. Selser, who was named to the all-conference, regional and state teams this past fall, despite having her season cut short due to a collarbone injury, will also compete in track (due to NCAA rules, she can’t sign that NLI until April).

“I’ve dreamed of playing in college since I was four and I’m so excited to start my journey in two sports,” said Selser, the reigning Class A state champion in the 800 in both indoor and outdoor track. “I wanted to go somewhere in the mountains, but within five minutes of meeting the coaches and looking around the campus, I fell in love with the school.”

“Juliana has a relentless work ethic above everything else,” said Jeff Selser, who is also South Portland’s girls’ soccer coach. “She’s dedicated to both sports. She tries to find what her weaknesses are, then turn them into strengths. She never gives up.”

Scarborough senior Gaby Panagakos commits to U. Maine

Scarborough senior Gaby Panagakos commits to U. Maine

...Red Storm coach Mike Farley believes Panagakos has what it takes to succeed at the next level as well.

“(Gaby’s) a freakish offensive talent,” Farley said. “If she would have played more on varsity as a freshman, she would have broken (Maureen McHugh’s) school (goal scoring) record. You can always count on good offensive players to be there in games. Athletically, she can play with anybody. She’ll do fine. She’s a smart kid and no one will be faster than her.”

Biddeford’s Keely to play D2 soccer at Franklin Pierce

Biddeford’s Ailaina Keely to play D2 soccer at Franklin Pierce

...BIDDEFORD — Biddeford girls soccer standout Ailaina Keely signed her National Letter of Intent on Tuesday afternoon to play Division II soccer at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire next fall.

Keely is excited to take the next step and to compete at the collegiate level.

“(Signing) takes the stress off — it’s definitely a lot easier knowing that I know where I’m going and know where I’m playing next year. It’s exciting to be able to play next year and continue my career,” said Keely.

Keely made an immediate impact for the Tigers as a freshman, and scored a pair of goals in her high school debut. She continued to be one of Biddeford’s top players for rest of her career.

Things weren’t always easy, as Keely faced multiple injuries and missed a significant portion of her junior campaign. However, Keely rebounded and finished her career strong for the orange and black.
