After 23 years, Townsend steps away from soccer sideline

... Ed Hastings, who was the athletic director at Georges Valley from 2003-11, said Townsend’s resignation “will be a big loss” in the community.

“He’s just a steadfast individual,” said Hastings. “Other than the heyday of Sam [Pendleton] in terms of Thomaston when it was just SAD 50, he’s a fixture and he’ll be very difficult to replace The time he’s committed while trying to run a business had to have had an impact.”

Townsend also ran the annual Mariner (formerly Buccaneer) girls soccer play day every year in late August prior to the start of the regular season, where teams as far as Presque Isle came to participate in.

“He’s well known and very highly respected in the state,” said Hastings. “He was a big part of Georges Valley and then he made the crossover with Oceanside and he’ll be difficult to replace.”

Open Dorr: Thomaston man tabbed as new Mariner girls soccer coach
New era begins as Rene Dorr replaces area coaching legend Darryl Townsend

...Dorr worked under Townsend as a junior varsity coach for three years in the late 1990s and went on to be the boys varsity soccer coach at Rockland for two years in the early 2000s. He also has been the jayvee coach for the Oceanside boys program the past few years under head coach Matt Petrie.

Dorr said Townsend “has some incredible knowledge that I just don’t have yet,” but added, “I think our styles are very similar” both in terms of coaching and team personnel.

“We worked very well together,” said Dorr. “I’m loud and I talk a lot and I’m looking to have fun with the girls and try to get fun back into sports. Our styles are very similar so I don’t think it will be that big of an adjustment for the girls.”

Dorr said his position as the town’s recreation director in addition to being the high school's girls soccer coach should be “a good fit.”
