Notes: Match play championship set for Waterville
Maine State Golf Association tournament will be 3 days, with 5 rounds

...Match play features two golfers playing head-to-head for each hole. The match is over when one player can’t be caught. For example, if a player is ahead by two holes with one to play, the match is over.

The match play championship was reinstated at the request of some players in 2010. Five players have taken part in all seven match play tournaments since 2010: Joe Alvarez (who won in 2010), Ricky Jones (2014 winner), Matt Greenleaf (2013 winner), Mike Doran, and Scott Sirois. Of those five, Alvarez is the only player to win at least one match in each of the seven tournaments. With a 16-6 record in match play, Alvarez has the highest winning percentage (72.7 percent) in the tournament’s seven-year history,

This is the third big event hosted by Waterville in recent years. The club hosted the Maine Amateur in 2015, and the Maine Women’s Amateur in 2014

Kannegieser, Baker and Chapman advance in Match Play Invitational

OAKLAND — Will Kannegieser of Minot and Joe Baker of Oxford advanced to the second day of the Match Play Invitational at Waterville Country Club on Tuesday. But only one of the Martindale Country Club members will make it to the third day

Kannegieser and Baker will square off in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, teeing off at 8 a.m. in one of four matches that will also include Craig Chapman of Auburn.

Kannegieser, who was the runner-up at last year's Match Play, defeated Len Cole, 6 and 5, in the round of 32, then knocked off Eric Dugas, 2-up, in the round of 16.

Top-seeded Jack Wyman advances in Maine Match Play Invitational
Wyman needs a late rally in his second match to reach the quarterfinals

OAKLAND — Jack Wyman won the Maine Amateur this summer. He also won the Portland County Club championship. And he’s still in the running for the title at the Maine Match Play Invitational.

He needed all that experience Tuesday to avoid elimination.

The top-seeded Wyman faced a two-hole deficit with five remaining before coming back, then winning on the 18th for a 1-up victory against Mike O’Brien, putting him into the quarterfinals at the Waterville Country Club.

Wyman, Grindle advance to Match Play final
The top two finishers in the Maine Amateur – Jack Wyman and Sam Grindle – will meet in the championship match.

...“I’m going home. I’m going to bed. I’m tired, man,” said Wyman, the top seed and reigning Maine Amateur champ. “It’s mental warfare. That’s all it is. It’s a completely different game than stroke play. You’re kind of playing against yourself and trying to figure out how deep you can dig.”

Wyman continued his dominant summer, cruising to a 7-and-6 victory over Craig Chapman in the semifinals. Wyman will meet No. 2 seed Sam Grindle in the final at 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

Grindle, who defeated No. 3 seed Joe Baker 3-and-2 in the semifinals, placed second to Wyman in the Maine Amateur at Brunswick Golf Club in July.

“I’ve played a lot with Jack in the last five or six years. I’ve played with him a bunch. He’s a good guy. Should be a fun one,” Grindle said.
