Stephanie Rodrigue keeping her emotions in check for Maine Junior Championships

...The soon-to-be senior at Lewiston High School is trying not to get her emotions the better of her when she’s out on the course.

The mental game may be the thing that puts Rodrigue over the hump next week. She’s been close in previous attempts at the Maine Junior, but to date has yet to win the final MSGA major before players turn their focus to the high school season.

"I’ve been much better with that this year than any other year," Rodrigue said after the first round of the Maine Women’s Amateur at Martindale last week. "I know it’s a game and I am playing for fun, but I am enjoying myself and having fun, just playing my game. I just want to go low."

In 2016 she finished fifth, while in 2015 she fired back-to-back 80s and was just one shot back of champion Lauren Schonewolf of Cape Elizabeth. ... ps/2170520

Maine Junior Golf: Girls gunning for Plourde, boys' title up for grabs

She might be the defending champion, but Bailey Plourde has plenty of motivation heading into the Maine Junior Amateur Golf Championship at Val Halla Golf Course, which begins Tuesday.

Plourde is coming off a disappointing runner-up finish in last week's Maine Women's Amateur Championship — her second straight second-place finish behind champion Staci Creech. A second Maine Junior girls' title won't be easy, however. Plourde, a recent Lincoln Academy graduate and Samoset Resort member, has plenty of competition ready to take the title away. ... bs/2174584

Roop, Lacognata lead after first day of Maine Junior Amateur Championship

...Higgins did play good enough Tuesday to sit in second place, shooting a 3-over-par 75, and earn a spot in the top boys’ 16-18 group heading into Wednesday’s second and final round.

Leader Lucas Roop (2-over 74), of Gorham, and China’s Connor Paine will join Higgins in the final group.

Despite his dissatisfaction was on par with the theme of the day. In fact, he was more pleased than most.

Erin Holmes comes from far behind to win Maine Junior girls' golf title

CUMBERLAND — Six strokes down with 10 holes to play, Erin Holmes went to work.

Lucas Roop wins Maine Junior boys' golf title in three-hole playoff

...Higgins, of South Portland, tapped in his par putt on Val Halla's first hole, and Roop's ball sat on the fringe, about 15 feet downhill from the hole.

"I thought I had it," Higgins said. "That was a huge putt. I didn't think it was going in."

Even Roop thought the 15-year-old Higgins was going to be the champion. But Roop rolled the ball uphill and into the hole.

"I really did not think I had a chance to make that because I could't really make anything outside of 8 feet all day," Roop said. "I guess I made it when it counted. That was one of the hardest greens, too, to make putts on." ... ff/2175461
