Maine Open:: July 24-25

Postby Tom Nolette » Sun Jul 23, 2017 5:48 am

The Charlie's Maine Open starts today at the Augusta Country Club with a Pro-Am event benefiting the scholarship of the Maine State Golf Association.

This is the sixth consecutive year that the Open is being held at Augusta, and the 13th time in the history of Maine's most prestigious professional golf tournament. Ted Brown, last year's champ, is hoping to repeat as players compete for the $9,000 championship check.

Area players in the field are pros Jerry DiPhillippo of Fox Ridge and Chad Hopkins of Apple Valley. Geoffrey Sisk of Massachusetts is a past champion who has won lots of money on mini tours.

The two round championship will be played July 24-25.

Maine Open: Hutchins' busy summer brings him back to Maine

... He's traveled throughout the United States, competing in some of the top amateur golf tournaments, as well as some professional tournaments. His next stop will be teeing it up at Augusta Country Club for the Maine Open, a two-day tournament which begins Monday.

The former Falmouth native's summer was planned way out in advance to get into the best possible tournaments he could.

"Back in the wintertime, you got to sign up pretty early and I just went through trying to play in the top amateur tournaments in the world," Hutchins said. "Fortunately I was ranked high enough that I could get into a lot of them. So I was trying to play against the best fields I could."

Thresher and Sisk both shot a 5-under 65.

Dornes overcomes rainy afternoon to lead by two

MANCHESTER — At first, Monday's opening round of the Charlie's Maine Open seemed to be shaping up into the haves versus the have-nots.

Several who have Maine golf titles on their resumes and morning tee times enjoyed virtually ideal conditions to start the two-day tournament. Those with less successful records in the tournament who also started in the afternoon had to trudge through a steady drizzle.

Playing in the second-to-last group of the day, James Dornes of Lancaster, Pa., overcame the elements to make eight birdies and fire a 7-under 63 to take the lead at Augusta Country Club.

He will enter Tuesday's final round two strokes in front of Greater Bangor Open winner James Thresher and 1996 Maine Open champion Geoffrey Sisk at 5-under.

Undeterred by damp conditions, Dornes takes first-round lead
James Dornes of Pennsylvania shoots a 63 despite a steady afternoon rain.

...“Thought I kind of plopped my way around the course pretty well today,” Dornes said. “Just kept it in play off the tee and got a lot of wedges out here, so giving myself some pretty good yardages to where I had wedge in my hand, and was just putting it in good spots on the green.

“I hit a few tight, but just really hit it, kept it below the hole, which you’ve got to do out here on some holes. But just gave myself makeable putts all day, that’s all I can ask for. And the putter was going well.”

In all, 25 of the 105 players finished the first day under par.
