Worldly veteran golfer looking forward to first Greater Bangor Open

...Now he will finally get the chance.

Byrd will tee off in the opening round of the 51st annual GBO at 9 a.m. Thursday as the three-day, 54-hole tournament gets underway at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

“I’m 57 years old now so I wanted to come and play it before it was too late,” said Byrd after Wednesday’s pro-am.

Byrd, who originally is from Fayetteville, North Carolina, and played college golf at Marshall University in West Virginia, said this is his first time in Maine.

“It’s awesome. I just wish it would cool off a little bit. I came up here for some cool weather,” quipped Byrd.

The GBO is right in the middle of Byrd’s New England tour.

Former GBO winner returns for first time in 23 years, shoots a 68

...Widener, who shot a one-under-par 68 in Thursday’s opening round at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course, said the course doesn’t seem to have changed much in 23 years.

“It’s in really good shape. The greens are rolling well. I remember some of the shots I hit years ago. It’s really nice to be back,” said Widener who particularly recalled a wedge shot he hit “that kept me going.

“It was really fun to win,” he added.

This is more than just a golf trip for Widener. He also brought his wife, Hannah, and daughters Ava, who is 14, and Zenna (12).

Three tied for lead after first round of Greater Bangor Open

...Tyler Sluman of Sarasota, Florida, is tied with Duvall at 64. Sluman is the nephew of former PGA Tour winner and current Championship Tour golfer Jeff Sluman.

Two shots back of the lead are John Elliott of Bristol, Connecticut, Steven Burak of North Easton Massachusetts., Tommy Stirling of Gorham and Dartmouth, Massachusetts, native Mark Purrington.

Duvall, who is 33 years old as is Howard, said he played a lot of hockey with Howard growing up and was actually on a team coached by Howard’s father.

“Jimmy has done very well for himself and for our area..or for any area. He was always tough to score on. I used to be able to score on him a little because we used to play street hockey together and I knew a few of his weaknesses,” grinned Duvall who played the GBO “eight or nine years ago but missed the cut by a shot or two.”

Irish golf journeyman Cian Curley eyes big win in Bangor

BANGOR - As a pre-teen in Dublin, Ireland, Cian Curley was a multi-sport athlete. Gaelic football, soccer, field hockey, you name it, he played it. But then another sport came calling, and as it turned out, it was his calling.

Fast-forward to 2017, and at age 31, he is on top of his game.

"I'm playing the best golf I ever have right now," said Friday after the second round of the Greater Bangor Open. "For sure."

Connecticut natives share lead after two rounds of the GBO

...The 25-year-old Burak followed an opening round 65 with a 66 on Friday to move himself within one shot of the lead that is shared by Connecticut natives C.J. Swift of New Canaan and Jason Thresher of West Suffield. The final round is Saturday and there are 15 golfers within three shots of the lead.

Swift and Thresher are each at eight-under par 130 as Swift carded a 67 on Friday to go with Thursday’s 63 and Thresher fired a 64 to accompany his opening-round 66.

Swift had five birdies and three bogeys on Friday and Thresher had an eagle on the 526-yard fourth hole, five birdies and two bogeys.
