New England Junior Amateur: Camden's Cole Anderson wins

AYER, MASS. — The achievements — and subsequent accolades — on the links continue to roll along, like a 300-yard drive down the middle of the fairway, for Cole Anderson of Camden, who won the New England Junior PGA Championship, played on Wednesday and Thursday, July 5-6 at Shaker Hills Golf Club.

Anderson, a junior at Camden Hills Regional High School who has committed to play college golf at Division I Florida State University in 2019, finished first, as he bested 51 others with a 1-over par for the two-day event.

Anderson prevailed by seven strokes over runner-up Logan Thompson, who plays for Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

Camden Hills golfer qualifies for U.S. Amateur Championship

...Anderson, a two-time Class A individual state champion who has committed to play collegiate golf at Florida State University, didn’t know how to react when his ball dropped into the center of the cup.

“To be honest, I was completely shocked,” Anderson said. “I was like, oh my God, I’m going to play in the U.S. Amateur. It’s something you dream of, really.”

The U.S. Amateur is scheduled for Aug. 14-20 and features two rounds of stroke play before the top 64 players head to the match-play portion of the tourney.

The field is reseeded after stroke play.

...The U.S. Amateur will be played Aug. 14-20 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Anderson finished 36 holes having shot a three-under par 69 in his first round and ended the day firing a six-under par 66 for a 135 total gross.

He also eagled two of his final four holes, one on the par-5, 492-yard seventh hole (16th of his round) and the one-hole playoff on the par-5, 454-yard 10th.

“It was easily the biggest tournament I’ve ever played in,” said Anderson of the 82-player field. “The U.S. Am is the pinnacle of amateur golf really. Everybody dreams of playing it and it’s like the number one field [and] it’s always at an awesome venue. I’m just beyond excited at this point to be a part of it. They’re the best amateur golfers in the world. It’s going to be a blast for sure.”

Camden-native Cole Anderson misses cut at U.S. Amateur

PACIFIC PALISADES, California - Cole Anderson out of Camden entered the U.S. Amateur with plenty of potential. The Florida St.-bound 16-year-old has opened eyes around the state of Maine for his play, and qualified for the U.S. Amateur in California.

A strong first round Monday led him to the clubhouse with a 72, but the second round Tuesday would not be so forgiving.

Anderson misses cut at U.S. Amateur Championships
Camden Hills junior, age 16, experiences one of best amateur tourneys in world

PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. — Cole Anderson of Camden said heading into the U.S. Amateur Championships golf tournament that “it’s going to be a lot more about the experience, because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”

With that in mind, the 16-year-old Anderson enjoyed — and gained — valuable experience as he competed against 311 of the top-ranked amateur golfers in the world on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 14-15 at the Riviera County Club.

In the end, however, Anderson, who was in the mix to make the cut after day one of the six-day competition, carded higher figures on day two — shooting an 11-over 81 — and, ultimately, missed the cut.
