Report: Unity Raceway to be sold to Benton man

George Fernald Jr. has agreed to purchase the track from longtime owner Ralph Nason Jr., according to a centralmaine.com report.

George Fernald Jr., who leased Unity Raceway for five years, has agreed to purchase the track from longtime owner Ralph Nason Jr., according to a centralmaine.com report.

Nason has not disclosed the purchase price of the track but said in the report that Fernald will be in control of the facility on Jan. 1, 2017.

Fernald of Benton leased the track from 2008-12 until closing it in August 2012 because of financial problems.

“As of January 1, he’s going to be in control of it,” said Nason, who would not disclose the purchase price. “It’s just kind of time for me. It was one of those things where the longer it goes where I don’t (sell) it, then comes the time where I’m forced to do something with it.

“I didn’t want it to come to that.”

“We have done a deposit. It is final,” Fernald said. “I’m going to see him later (Friday) with more money.”

Fernald confident of Unity Raceway success this time

George Fernald Jr. leased Unity Raceway from 2008 to 2012 before stepping away after losing more than $40,000 over those five years. But Fernald is optimistic that the second time around will be profitable after he bought the track from Ralph and Nancy Nason earlier this month...

UNITY - Before the weather turns for good, local race tracks are getting in as much action as possible. Unity Raceway has one of its biggest weekends of the year coming up.

It will be Long John Weekend in a few days, the latest event in what has been an eventful year at the track, which underwent ownership changes early this summer. This past weekend saw the qualifying rounds for the races, but rain made it somewhat difficult to get as many cars out on the track as they wanted.

Long John 116 set to roll at Unity

UNITY — It began as a late-season fling for local racers back in 1986, and despite a series of changes in promoters, it not only survived but has grown into one of the richest single-day Late Model races in the state. When the 30th annual Long John 116 takes the green flag Sun...
