Oxford 250 notebook: Theriault has big goals, but hasn’t forgotten his roots
Fort Kent native Austin Theriault has never finished outside the top five at the Oxford 250

OXFORD — Austin Theriault spent his free time this year building himself a race car. That car debuts this weekend in the 43rd annual H.P. Hood Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway.

It’s a fitting debut for Theriault’s shiny new black No. 57 car. Theriault has made four career starts in the Oxford 250, finishing in the top five in each time, including a runner-up finish in 2014.

“It’s somewhere I want to win really bad,” Theriault said. “The amount

Tire change helps New Hampshire driver win Oxford 250

Wayne Helliwell Jr. took advantage of traffic on lap 244, slipped underneath race leader Travis Benjamin coming off Turn 4 and pulled away to win the 43rd annual HP Hood Oxford 250 Sunday evening at Oxford Plains Speedway. Helliwell, from Dover, New Hampshire, pitted for new tire...

Helliwell Jr. wins Oxford 250
Wayne Helliwell Jr. passes Travis Benjamin with six laps left to win his first 250

... Helliwell got underneath Benjamin following a lap 227 restart and hounded him for nearly 20 laps. He was unable to make the pass with Benjamin’s momentum off the outside lane.

When the slow car of Garrett Evans clogged up Benjamin’s lane of choice, Helliwell scooted up the inside and had a clear path to victory. Benjamin made a last-gasp effort with two laps remaining, but his right side tires caught dirt on the top of the backstretch to slow his momentum.

“I knew we were going to catch him, but I really didn’t know where (Evans) was going to go,” said Benjamin, the 2013 and 2014 Oxford 250 champion, who led a race-high 159 laps Sunday. “I probably shouldn’t have backed out. That late in the race, we probably would have made it fine. I don’t really blame him for that. I blame myself, really.”

Homecoming doesn't go as planned for Austin Theriault

... Not so much Sunday. Theriault was involved in a crash in lap 121 that left the back end of his car dangling. He pressed on for a few caution laps before taking a pit stop. His crew finished tearing off his back end, but Theriault didn’t return to the race.

It was the first time in five starts that Theriault wasn’t in the mix at the end.

Theriault said his problems started earlier in the race. He started sixth and remained among the top third of the field but had lost distance to the leaders.

“I think we had a slow leak in the left rear tire and it kept getting looser,” Theriault said. “We wanted to stay out as long as we could, so we had fresher tires at the end of the race. Guys were passing us that had taken tires.”

Oxford 250 news and notes: Brackett draws No. 1 with Aspire Higher car

OXFORD — Late Model division points leader Tim Brackett drew the pole in Heat 1 of Sunday's Oxford 250, the first time he has drawn the coveted first position for qualifying.

After losing his power steering in the first heat, Brackett qualified for the feature as a result of his standing in points. Unfortunately, the Aspire Higher team from Oxford Hills Middle School still had an early exit, as Brackett's day was done after 46 laps.
