Second annual ACT/PASS twinbill kicks off busy season at Oxford

OXFORD — In April 2015, the first-ever Twin 150s featuring the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) and the Vermont-based American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Models drew the largest opening-day crowd Oxford Plains Speedway had enjoyed in years.

The full-fendered doubleheader was a result of “peace talks” between principals of the two groups and delivered all of the side-by-side action fans have come to expect at Oxford. It also set a positive tone for what turned out to be a successful season for short track racing here in the northeast.

Robbins keeps SLM streak alive at Oxford

Former Oxford 250 winner Scott Robbins (2002) kept an amazing streak of no repeat winners alive as he drove to victory in Saturday night's 50-lap Super Late Model trophy dash Oxford Plains Speedway. Robbins was the eighth different winner in eight races contested thus far in 2016.

Robbins, of Dixfield, prevailed in a hotly-contested battle that saw Hebron's Alan Wilson setting a fast pace for several laps. Two-time champion Shawn Martin of Turner made another one of his patented, late-race charges to the front (from sixteenth on the grid) to secure second, while Wilson settled for third. Bangor's Gary Smith and Oxford's Dennis Spencer Jr. completed the top five.

Bangor’s Smith cruises to Oxford Plains victory

OXFORD, Maine — Gary Smith of Bangor drove to victory lane after charging past a few early race leaders to claim a career-first Oxford Plains Speedway Super Late Model win, topping the Budweiser Championship Series stock car racing card Saturday night.

Rookie Josh Childs of Oxford led a healthy portion of the Super Late Model 50-lap race’s early stages before yielding to Alan Wilson of Hebron, who set the pace through the event’s middle stages. Scott Moore of Anson took the point away from Wilson, but there was no stopping Smith, who surged ahead en route to the victory.

Adam Polvinen of Auburn was closest to the winner under the checkered flag, with the previous week’s Super Late Model winner, Scott Robbins of Dixfield, grabbing a third consecutive trophy. Moore, running better than ever recently at Oxford Plains Speedway, and Wilson filled out the top five.
