Shrine Klowns Meet Up With “The Flying Frenchman”

...“I walked through the door at Forest Hill Manor where there was a couch and who was sitting there but Erny “The Flying Frenchman” Levesque”, said Band Aide, an Anah Shrine Klown who was making the rounds to nursing homes in northern Maine Saturday.

The Shriner Klowns were blanketing northern Maine Saturday hoping to spread some Christmas cheer to any residents they came in contact with. The most northern part of the County was covered by Band Aide, Si as Santa Claus, Hearty, and Disco, all members of Anah Shrine Klown Unit.

New Sweden resident,Hearty, struck up a conversation with “The Flying Frenchmen” mentioning that as a young stock car racing fan in the late 60’s and early 70’s he watched Erny wheel the #29 Jade East Chevy at Spud Speedway. This was the first time he met one the icon from the St. John Valley. The two were able to talk racing several minutes and share stories.

Karting, Daytona, Books, and Hot Cars

NMKA members met last week to discuss their new rule package and planned for the 2017 racing season. The club voted to accept World Karting Association (WKA) specifications for the Briggs & Stratton Animal engine. Most kart tracks in Maine now utilize the WKA spec Animal engines.

According to the NMKA Engine Committee, the common specification should allow racers from most major tracks in Maine to race at other facilities without needing separate engines.

Other items discussed dealt with rule clarifications, tire/rim rules, gear ratio rule, and race day procedures.

When Racing Legend Meets Future Legend Good Things Happen

What we know about a racer’s public life may not always reflect all that makes him or her a person. A classic example is Fort Kent’s Austin Theriault.

Yes, you may know that he is pursuing his dream on the big stage in NASCAR, however, that is only a part of what makes this young man tick. Much of what happens out of the public eye defines the nature of the man from the County.

Penske-ized Snowmobile Racer at Caribou Snow Drags

When I last saw the Arctic Cat perform, the team was participating in the Central Maine Snowmobile Race Association (CMSRA) event at the Northern Maine Fairgrounds November 2016. The rain made the track soupy despite the concentrated efforts of Rick Guerrette and crew. Mud seemed to permeate every surface of the sleds in the races.

Immediately after the Presque Isle “Mud Drag Race”, Holmquist completely disassembled his sled in his garage in Caribou. Mud was washed away revealing a small crack in the chassis which Holmquist had repaired. As far as he knew at the time there were Radar Runs scheduled in Portage prior to the Caribou Race.

UP NORTH MOTORSPORTS
First Maine Driver to Win at Daytona International Speedway and He Is From the County

Aroostook County is constantly being bombarded with negative news it seems. Drugs, high unemployment, poverty and bad news sometimes can seem like normal. This weekend made some of that bad news at least get bumped off center stage when 22-year-old Austin Theriault became the first Maine race car driver to win at Daytona International Speedway.

With help from my trusty racing history researcher, Gary Saucier of Fort Fairfield, we believe Austin Theriault’s win at DIS early Saturday evening was the first trip to Victory Lane for any driver from Maine. This includes any of the major series that visit Daytona which is arguably one of the best known tracks in the world. Newburgh, Maine native Rickie Craven finished third at the 1997 Daytona 500.

Busch Wins, Racing Preview, and on Memory Lane

This week I suspect you would look for coverage of the Daytona 500. I will acknowledge that Kurt Busch won his first 500 and the first in a Ford for Stewart Haas Racing. He certainly deserved the win. Need I mention that none of my picks finished out of the top 15.

I heard it mentioned several times in multiple interviews that Atlanta next weekend will be the true test of where the teams stand in regards to competitiveness and preparation for the 2017 championship. We shall see.

Steve Perry’s Mainely Motorsports’ 2017 Racing Preview

As I left my son’s apartment early Saturday morning in Portland, my wife and I drove by the Portland Exposition Center where I noticed the sign below.

Despite Extreme Cold The Snowmobile Racing Shows Went On

Snowmobile Races Held in County Despite Extreme Cold

Snowmobile racers must be a hardy lot. This past Saturday two events were held in the County which had to test the mettle of racers, officials, and spectators. Minus 20 wind chills made conditions at Patten for the Rock Maple Racing (RMR) cross-country race and Central Maine Snowmobile Race Association (CMSRA) at the Northern Maine Fairgrounds drag race challenging to say the least.
