UpNorth Motorsports Highlights of 2017

2017 was a season to remember not only for Austin Theriault. His followers from the most northeast state were treated to what could happen when hard work is coupled with the right team making the right decisions throughout a race season.

What began with a conversation at the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) hallway at the Indiana Convention Center in December 2016, culminated with a title for Ken Schrader Racing and Austin Theriault. Seven wins in a 20 race series is an accomplishment in itself. Wins at each type of track; short, intermediate, super speedway, road course, and dirt gives one an indication of how magical the #52 team’s season played out.

Motorsports musings for 2018

This week I intended to share some stories about County folks doing great things with tractor restorations, antique tractor pulling, and loving the camaraderie resulting from those adventures. However, a post by Beth Griggs Richeson today has changed this episode to one that will require bumping the tractor folks to next week. Don’t miss episode 195, I think you will enjoy it.

Before I tell about Beth’s post, I must emphasize that from a young age I knew that my motorsports activities were going to be limited by my lack of spendable dollars. I knew that when I used a brush to paint my single speed pedal bike “Petty Blue” and gave it the number 43. It did not take a great deal of searching to discover other kids who could afford much better equipment.

Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona kicks off Speedweeks 2018

A mixture of perennial rye grass and annual rye grass carefully planted in the intricate pattern of the Campbell Blue Bird II took place in November 2107. Griffeth and crew has nurtured the turfgrass for the biggest speed events in the world.

Mowing, fertilizing, and watering combined with the addition of the Daytona logo by another specialty company, has made the design come alive for the motorsports events in January and February. The front stretch tri-oval is probably one of the most photographed areas at the speedway.

Griffeth, a Class of 2000 Caribou High School graduate and member of the first CHS Hall of Fame Inductees, worked at Fenway Park as the assistant for 14.5 years before taking over the Head of Grounds position at Daytona International Speedway (DIS) in November 2016.

Lets Go Racing Football is Done

It is hard to imagine that one week ago today I was witnessing the final hours of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Not a sign of snow! The racing was great, however, the human side was as exciting as the race. I hope to have my favorite story, Honda America Racing Team (HART), for the next episode. Meanwhile…

Snowmobile Racing in the County
Caribou Snowmobile Club drag racing results

The Caribou Snowmobile Drag Race was held January 28 while I was covering the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. I received the results recently thanks to Nick Morrill. From what I heard, there was about 650 spectators at the event and the weather was great for racers and fans.

Family, Friends and Memories

Sometimes the journey of a thousand miles begins with big steps. In the case of Wyatt Alexander Racing (WAR) that big step began in the summer of 2017 when the family cut back their season due to their driver, Wyatt, heading off to school in North Carolina.

With Wyatt moving south the family had many tasks to accomplish before school started at University of North Carolina-Charlotte. For Jenn and Brett a son had to get moved from their home in Ellsworth to his new home not far from campus.

For Wyatt’s sister Quinn, a transition had to be made from seeing her older brother daily to seeing him only on occasion. Wyatt and Quinn’s mother, Jenn Alexander said, “It has been tough on Quinn. She adores her brother. She misses him every day. Thankfully we have been able to see him several times since he made the move.”
