Bangor Christian outlasts Richmond for ‘D’ boys soccer championship

...“They have been talking about this (matchup) for a while,” said Wilcox, whose teams have won eight state titles overall during his 20-year BC coaching tenure. “They really, really wanted this.”

In 2014, Richmond had beaten BC 3-0 to end the Patriots state-record-setting run of five consecutive championships from 2009-2013.

Lehman’s eventual game-winner game came just 11:58 into the first half as he headed in a long service from teammate Erik Gorczok.

“I saw Erik hit a nice chip over the defender,” said Lehman. ““He just wants to hit it as far as he can and he saw me. It was a great ball.”

Gorczok, a senior who shifted from striker to midfield this season, lofted his kick from the right wing near midfield toward the left goalpost. Lehman was anticipating the play and jumped to the ball first with a header inside the near post.

Richmond falls to Bangor Christian in D boys' soccer championship

...“It is very emotional,” senior forward Matt Rines said. “Our entire team worked really hard, we came a long way. I’m disappointed that we came out on the wrong end, but I’m nothing but thankful and proud to be with this amazing group of teammates.”

There were emotions on both sides, though Bangor Christian’s was rooted in vengeance. The Patriots’ trophy case is extensive, but they still think of the one that got away — a 3-0 loss to Richmond in 2014, when their seniors were in their freshman years.

Three years later, the favor has been returned.

“The guys really wanted to play Richmond,” Patriots (16-2) coach Aaron Wilcox said. “They’ve been talking about this for a while. They really, really wanted this.”

Bangor Christian soccer juggernaut a grass-roots effort

...But the nearly decade-long run of the Bangor Christian boys soccer dynasty is no modest accomplishment.

Since the start of the 2009 season, the Patriots are 151-9-1 overall with seven Class D state championships and eight regional titles in nine years – and the one season that didn’t conclude at states ended in the North championship game.

Those lofty achievements, which at one point included a 64-match winning streak, continued last Saturday as the Patriots capped off an unscored-upon four-match postseason streak by defeating Richmond 1-0 in the 2017 state final at the Weatherbee Complex in Hampden.

“It’s motivation, definitely,” said Dean Grass, a senior and four-year starter at the Outer Broadway school, “because we know what’s been done before and we just want to hold up the tradition and our legacy as Bangor Christian Patriots.”
