Yarmouth remains perfect with 2-1 victory over York
A Max Coury goal in the second half lifts the defending state champion Clippers to the win and a Class B South title.

...“I’m more excited,” Hagerty said in the gathering darkness Wednesday night, “about two more practices. This senior class we’ve known since they were 3 years old, and it’s really kind of fun to be able to hang out with them for two more days.”

One of those 14 Yarmouth seniors, midfielder Max Coury, postponed autumn’s inevitable end by curling a shot inside the far post for a tie-breaking goal, the only score of the second half.

The top-seeded Clippers (17-0) advance to the Class B state title game against either Winslow or Washington Academy on Saturday at Deering High.

No. 2 York finishes 14-3. All three losses came against Yarmouth, all decided by one goal.

York misses on chance to advance to state final

...Senior captain Luke Groothoff sent a well-placed cross on the foot of Max Coury. The senior midfielder then fired a one-timer past York netminder Brett Smith in the 51st minute, giving Yarmouth a 2-1 lead and the goal stood up as the Clippers advanced to their fourth straight Class B championship game with the 2-1 win.

“We were really humbled to be here,” second-year York head coach Eric Martens said. “We knew we had a lot of good players coming into the season, but we know there were a lot of good teams, so getting to a final against Yarmouth, which we certainly consider to be the cream of the crop, was great for us. We knew it was going to be a good match. We take our hats off to them, they are really a good soccer team.”

York finished the season with a record of 14-3, with all three losses being one-goal decisions against Yarmouth.

“It hurts to lose, but to a team like that, I think we’ll look back (on this) and say ‘wow, that’s a good team,’” Martens said. “We really respect them.”
