Falmouth sends Portland to first loss, 1-0 in OT
Thomas Fitzgerald has the winning goal in a tight defensive game.

...“It was a well-placed shot,” said Portland Coach Rocco Frenzilli. “They just moved the ball quickly to one side, and he was able to cut back inside on our back. He had an opening, cut across the middle and was just able to beat Rowan (Daligan) on the weak side.”

Fitzgerald’s overtime heroics were only possible because of the dominant performance of another Falmouth underclassman. Freshman goalie Alvaro Fuentes-Cantillana turned in his third career shutout in four starts.

“He played a great game,” said Frenzilli. “Obviously, if you stop balls from going in, you’ve done your job. And that’s what the keeper is supposed to do. On both ends, it mostly went that way. He got a chance to make his saves and they were able to sneak one by us.”

Falmouth edges Deering on late PK

FALMOUTH—Falmouth’s perennially strong boys’ soccer team came into this season, its first as a member of the Southwestern Maine Activities Association, full of unknowns and largely devoid of its accustomed high expectations.

But as September gives way to the playoff month of October, the Yachtsmen are reminding a new set of opponents just how special they can be when they’re clicking on all cylinders.

Tuesday evening, Falmouth hosted talented Deering in a battle of once-beaten squads and as expected, there wasn’t much separation over 80 minutes, but in the end, the Yachtsmen found a way to prevail in dramatic fashion.

Falmouth edges Deering on a late penalty kick
Nate Arrants scores the winner again on a penalty kick with 2:45 left in regulation.

...“Since the Noble game, I’ve put in a lot of work to make sure I can finish those,” said Arrants. “I was so nervous in the Noble game and I wanted to make sure I’d be more comfortable because they’re usually in big spots. We practice them a lot, and sometimes after practice we’ll just stick around and make sure we’re placing them well.”

The penalty shot came a result of a handball in the box – a call many on the Deering side didn’t agree with.

“I couldn’t tell from this angle,” said Deering Coach Joel Costigan. “I know that handballs are always discretion and interpretation. I wasn’t there to see it but I would say one of the things I always want is the referee to call the game as they see it. If it’s a handball, it’s a handball; If it’s a penalty it’s a penalty; If it’s a penalty kick, it’s a penalty kick.”

Falmouth rallies to stun Scarborough in OT

FALMOUTH—The first countable regular season meeting in 15 years between perennial boys’ soccer powers Falmouth and Scarborough was certainly worth the wait.

That’s because when the Red Storm and Yachtsmen finally did square off Tuesday evening, 80 minutes weren’t enough to determine a winner.

After a scoreless first half, Scarborough stunned the hosts just 21 seconds into the second half when junior Noah Drapeau set up senior Brandon Wasser for the game’s first goal.
