York confident as it returns to field

...Nickerson, according to Martens, looked strong in Monday’s practice.

“He gets better every year,” Martens said. “He plays soccer year-round. I think the biggest thing is that he’s going to contribute this year is his leadership; he’s a great leader by example with a great work ethic and I think the younger players will respond to the energy that he brings.”

Martens and the Wildcats would like to repeat last year’s success and make another run in this year’s Class B South tournament.

“I think it’s too early to set goals, but that’s in the back of everyone’s mind though,” Martens said. “We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. We’re going to focus on our (opener) and I think if we can keep our short-term goals in mind, and focus on those, we have a lot of potential to do some good things like we did last year.”

Wildcats welcome former Clemson player to staff

YORK — Eric Martens is “super excited” to have Julie Johnson on his York High School boys soccer coaching staff this season.

He even laughed that “she probably has more experience than me.”

Johnson, a four-year standout at Lewiston High School from 1994 to 1998 and then a four-year player at Clemson University, will be the York boys junior varsity soccer coach this fall and will do “whatever else (Martens) wants me to do.”

“I know she’s a competitor, and I know that she is going to get a lot out of the kids,” Martens said after Monday morning’s first practice of the season.

John Bapst boy's soccer hopes for repeat success despite gaping holes

BANGOR - For John Bapst boy's soccer, 2017 will be a whole lot different than 2016.

"Yea it’s going to be rough. We lost a bunch of team players last year but we’re going to try to have to step it up this year and fill the gaps," senior Sean Adams said.

The Crusaders graduated 13 seniors and only return one starter from a team that reached the Class B North title game last season.
