Bangor boys and girls soccer teams advance in playoffs

BANGOR - Brewer and Brunswick stood in the way of both No. 1-ranked Bangor soccer teams, and neither proved to be enough of a roadblock.

The girls knocked off Brewer 1-0 in a game that came down to the second half, while the boys jumped out against the Dragons and carried home a 2-0 win to advance in the playoffs.

Late goals lift Bangor boys soccer team past Brunswick

... “Any time you’re going into a second half 0-0 or in a one-goal game there’s a lot of pressure so I just think we felt the weight of time and played with more urgency.”

Bangor (13-1-1) faces No. 3 Mt. Ararat of Topsham (13-2) in Saturday’s semifinals. The Eagles rallied past No. 6 Messalonskee of Oakland 2-1 on Wednesday.

No. 7 Brunswick finished 6-7-3.

“Brunswick did a good job, they had a good game plan, a good strategy and executed it well and wouldn’t give us an opportunity to convert in the first half,” said Bangor coach Garth Berenyi. “In the second half we had to step it up and be a little bit quicker and more assertive and finish the opportunities that we did get.”
