Mt. Blue earns upset win over Brewer

HAMPDEN — The Mt. Blue Cougars defeated the Brewer Witches 3-0 in a Class A North preliminary round contest held at Hampden Academy on Saturday.

William Salisbury had a goal and an assist to lead the Cougars (3-9-2). Tristin McFarlane and Sam Smith also scored, while Hunter Bolduc had an assist on Salisbury's goal.

Both goalies, Tucker Carleton of Mt. Blue and Drew Baker of Brewer (6-7-2), made three saves.

Mt. Blue will now travel to Edward Little to face the top-seeded Red Eddies in a quarterfinal Tuesday.

Brunswick shuts out Hampden in Class A North prelim

... “It was a cold night, so we each had to get in our groove and get warmed up,” Brunswick senior forward Carlyle Boyle said. “At first, they were coming in great and hard. They had great tackling in the midfield, and they caught us off guard, but we just played our game, kept our heads up and kept slotting those balls through to get the goals.”

Then came Brunswick senior captain Henry Doherty. By far the tallest player on the pitch, Doherty was gunning for goal again on a free kick in the 33rd minute, after putting a header on frame just minutes before. On this attempt, he launched up over the Broncos’ defenders and redirected a looping delivery from Murray right over Farnham’s head for a 2-0 lead.

Gorham looks to break quarterfinal losing streak
The top-seeded Rams will take on No. 9 Westbrook Tuesday in Class A South.

... The Rams are undefeated entering their quarterfinal against No. 9 Westbrook at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Gorham (13-0-1) shut out Westbrook 7-0 on Sept. 27, but Fotter and fellow senior captains – Ryan Firmin, Tyler Richman and Alex York – said they know better than to overlook the Blue Blazes (8-6-1).

“We know we’re going to get everyone’s best game because they’re going to expect us to be good,” Fotter said. “But I think the target has been on our back all season, and we’ve dealt with it well so far.”

The Rams averaged five goals a game in the regular season, led by Fotter, who scored 31. York, the Rams’ goalkeeper, recorded 10 shutouts.

Boys' Soccer Playoff Preview: Twin Cities still at head of Class A North

The Class A North boys' soccer playoffs will once again run through the Twin Cities, but unlike in previous years, it's Edward Little, not Lewiston, that has homefield advantage. That's just one of many storylines to keep an eye on as the playoffs in all four classes get underway.

- Class A
- Class B
- Class C
- Class D
