Seacoast United soccer team wins national title

The Seacoast United U-17 boys’ soccer team, featuring several local players, won the recent National Cup at the Premier level in Aurora, Colorado. Seacoast United tied a team from Illinois and beat squads from New York and Washington state before edging Connecticut, 3-2, in the championship game.

“What a job the boys did all season,” said Martyn Keen, who along with Paul Cameron, served as coach. “It was a magical ride. The chemistry came through. The boys grew together. They played for each other all year.”

Club soccer teams claim national titles
Seacoast United wins in U-17 boys, while the GPS Phoenix win in U-14 boys.

Two Maine teams won championships at U.S. Club Soccer’s National Cup XV finals in Aurora, Colorado.

The Seacoast United SC Mariners from Topsham won the U-17 boys’ premier group, beating Connecticut FC United 98/99 by a 3-2 score in the final. The players on the team were Noah Niles and Chase Pierce of Saco; Mike Lydick, Greyson Cohen and Nick Buckley of Falmouth; Henry Coolidge and Matt Dostie of Yarmouth; Ryan Firmin, Jackson Fotter and Tyler Richman of Gorham; Alex Frank and Jonata Mbongo of Portland; Garth Berenyi of Bangor; Tyler Welch of Hermon; Jake Lapierre of Winslow; Peter Mayhorn of Waterville; Sam Wilkinson of Windsor; and Robert Inniss of Windham.

In the U-14 premier group, the GPS Maine Phoenix, based in Portland, beat Fredericksburg (Virginia) FC 2-1 in its final, with Ali Warsime of Lewiston scoring the winning goal in the second overtime. Other players on the GPS team were Luca Antolini, Alejandro Coury, Liam Ireland and John Clinton of Yarmouth; Max Murray and Ariel Calandri of Kennebunk; Thomas Fitzgerald of Falmouth; Alex Millones and Tahn Tiparos of Portland; Andrew Rent of Gorham; Bilal Hersi of Lewiston; and Alex Vest of Cumberland.

The GPS Phoenix U14 boys’ soccer team, featuring several local players, won the US Club Soccer Nationals tournament in Aurora, Colorado on July 25. GPS Phoenix edged Leesburg, Virginia, 2-1, in double overtime, in the final. GPS Phoenix also finished third of 12 teams in the very competitive, year-long NPL league that consists of teams from throughout New England.
