CM Hockey notes: Winslow/Gardiner girls set for playoff rematch
Black Tigers face Brunswick in regional quarterfinals Wednesday.

...Winslow/Gardiner has won four straight entering the postseason and the team feels as though it’s playing its best hockey at the right time of year.

“At the beginning of the season, we were really looking forward to this season,” said junior forward Anna Chadwick. “I think we’re right where we want to be. We’re going to keep working hard, but we’re excited for the playoffs.”

Winslow/Gardiner is led by 30-goal scorer Evelyn Hinkley, a senior, and the rest of its top line featuring Chadwick and Sarah Stevens. But the Black Tigers have seen secondary scoring in bunches this winter, in part due to its depth and the ability of some of the team’s defensemen — including senior Bailey Robbins and a trio of sophomores in Julia Hinkley, Gabrielle Hebert and Kathryn Bailey — to jump up and contribute offensively. ... f-rematch/

Red Storm just keep rising up, top Tigers
Scarborough, in the South title game for five straight years, reaches the semifinals with a 2-0 win over Biddeford.

...Fourth-seeded Scarborough shut out No. 5 Biddeford/Thornton Academy/Wells 2-0 in the quarterfinal game on Tuesday at the University of Southern Maine. The Red Storm (9-9-1) will face No. 1 Cheverus/Kennebunk (17-1) on Saturday at the William B. Troubh Ice Arena for a shot at making it to their sixth straight Southern Maine final.

“Scarborough has dominated girls’ hockey, but Cheverus has a tremendous team,” said Scarborough Coach Caitlin Jordan, who took over the Red Storm’s program this season. “We’re going to work on our goal scoring and driving to the net. If we can just break through and get some pucks in the net, I think it will make a big difference just with morale.”

Jordan said scoring has been a bit of a challenge for the Red Storm this season, and that was the case against Biddeford. Scarborough controlled most of the game, outshooting the Tigers 34-6 despite the close score ... ops-tigers

Cape Elizabeth holds on for 4-3 quarterfinal win over Falmouth

...As it turned out, the third-seeded Capers needed all of that advantage. Sixth-seeded Falmouth rallied in the final 11 minutes, but Cape Elizabeth held on for a 4-3 win.

“We’re a young team, so I think we’re still in the process of learning how to win these big games,” Cape Elizabeth Coach Bob Mills said.

“We’re only running two lines, so we got tired. I think there were some nerves going into the third period, and I think some exhaustion as well. We were lucky to squeak it out.”

Greely ousts Edward Little again
Greely/Gray-New Gloucester knocks Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland out of the playoffs for the fourth straight year, 9-1.

...It’s the fourth year in a row that the Rangers (16-3) have eliminated the Red Eddies (4-14-1).

Greely’s top line accounted for all nine goals and got going early. Courtney Sullivan and Bridget Roberts fed fellow senior linemate Molly Horton 38 seconds into the game on a play that started when freshman Camilla Lattanzi’s shot from the point turned into a juicy rebound.

“It’s fun to watch them,” Rangers Coach Nate Guerin said. “We talked about them playing their last game in this building and hopefully trying to make it something to celebrate, and they didn’t waste much time getting started.”

Sullivan scored the next two goals, four minutes in from Lattanzi and 12 minutes in from Roberts, to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead after one period. ... tle-again/
