Camden Hills drives home with league's Class A championship
Windjammer junior Anderson shoots blistering 4-under par as medalist to buoy team

...In fact, exactly one week later under much cooler, ideal playing conditions, Camden Hills beat those other four squads to earn the league's Class A championship during the KVAC Class A and B shootout on Tuesday, Oct. 3 on the Rockland Golf Course.

Led by Cole Anderson's impressive 4-under par 32 on the par-36 front nine holes at Rockland, the Windjammers won the title, ultimately, by one stroke, which again proved to the teenage golfers each stroke in a round can be pivotal to team and individual success.

Camden Hills, which plays its home matches at the Samoset Resort Golf Course a few miles up the road in Rockport, won the league crown with a four-golfer, nine-hole stroke total of 170, while Messalonskee of Oakland finished at 171, Mount Ararat of Topsham 177, Lewiston 185 and Edward Little of Auburn 186. ... ip/1693084

Siblings use competitive fire to fuel Nokomis golf team
Brothers Sam and Josh Smestad are big reasons why Warriors are in the hunt for crown.

...Josh, a senior, is recognized as the better overall athlete, especially when it comes to basketball and baseball. But Sam, a junior, owns the golf course. And he knows it.

“I think (Josh) knows his place,” Sam said before the two broke out into laughter.

But when you combine the brothers together on the course — along with the play of senior Zach Hartsgrove and freshman up-and-comer Lindsay Cote — you have the core of the Nokomis golf team, a group that has enjoyed an 11-0 regular season and will play for a Class B state championships for the first time since 1999.

Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro will host the team state championships Saturday. ... golf-team/

Scarborough captures Class A team championship
Cape Elizabeth wins Class B, while Mattanawcook Academy is best in Class C at Natanis Golf Course.

...“That’s the hardest hole out here. An eagle on that hole is almost a four-shot difference over the rest of the field,” said Scarborough Coach Mike Murphy. “The scoring average on that hole has to be 5-plus.”

“It was a team effort and everybody did their part, and I think we all played great,” Burnham said.

Thirty-one five-person teams qualified for the state tournament – 11 in Class A and 10 each in B and C. Class A and B teams played on the 6,077-yard Tomahawk course, while Class C teams played the 5,876-yard Arrowhead course. Both are par-72 layouts. ... mpionship/

Gammaitoni's support each other in their chase for an individual title

...They will be both competing, but the duo from St. Dominic Academy won’t be competing against each other. Demetri, a sophomore, will be competing for the Class C boys’ title, while Markella, a senior, will be in the statewide girls’ championship.

Going after two different championships will allow them to prepare like it’s an ordinary round in the summer.

"It’s nice to have that support," Demetri said. "When you have bad day when you are playing with her, she brings you back up."

Demetri also said he hopes he offers Markella support when she is having a bad day on the course. ... le/2213119
