Golf championships: Lacognata starts strong, holds on to win the girls' individual title

...On the back nine, things tightened slightly. But even though Lacognata dropped four strokes to shoot a 2-under 70, she had plenty of clearance to defeat Jordan Laplume of Thornton Academy by three shots for the title.

"Yesterday, I spent the whole day at Falmouth (Country Club) with my coach," Lacognata said. "I felt really good leaving there last night. So ending in a good place last night put me in a good start this morning. I was pretty confident in my swing."

Lacognata birdied five of the first six holes she played and kept the momentum going with a par save on eight where she chipped it over the green on her second shot. Her birdie chip hit the flag stick and bounced back two inches from the cup.

Anderson, Thompson continue their reigns
Cole Anderson of Camden Hills ties with Scarborough's Anthony Burnham to earn a share of his third straight Class A title, Logan Thompson of Mattanawcook wins Class C for the fourth straight year, and Cape Elizabeth's Austin Legge (Class B) and Scarborough's Elizabeth Lacognata (girls) also earn championships.

...The Camden Hills junior shared a piece of his third consecutive Class A individual golf state championship, tying Scarborough’s Anthony Burnham with a 2-under 70 on the Tomahawk layout as the two golfers finished as co-champions.

“I think because Anthony and I are both super-competitive people, we’d both love to go out and play a playoff right now,” Anderson said. “If there’s anyone I’d be happy to share it with, it’s Anthony. He’s a good kid and I like him a lot, and he played well today.”

Anderson became just the third golfer in Class A history to win three straight state championships – joining Ryan Gay of Gardiner (2006-08) and Kevin MacDonald of Morse (1990-92). Gay tied for all three of his titles, while Anderson won his first two outright.
