‘It’s a lifetime sport’: Ellsworth coach receives national tennis honor

...Building on a tennis boom

Higgins never played tennis until his college days after serving in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy.

By the time he returned to eastern Maine to teach physical education at Ellsworth High School after graduating from Springfield College in 1974, there were few tennis options in the area.

“Down this way Roger Willey from the Willey’s clothing stores built a tennis court in his backyard, and there was a net that the tennis court builders put up,” Higgins recalled, “but before there were lines we’d make chalk marks and there could be 30 people out there a night waiting to play on that one court. Nobody knew much about tennis except from watching it on TV, but a lot of people wanted to play.”
