Camden Hills wins second straight ‘B’ boys tennis crown

...The ’Jammers then clinched the title barely a minute apart, Arau with a 6-0, 6-2 margin over Shepard Shutkin in a battle of left-handers at second singles, and Krul 6-2, 6-0 over Matt Clinton.

Camden Hills completed its sweep as David Poutasse and Noah Heidorn topped Max Allen and Andrei Lougovtsov 6-1, 6-3 at second doubles and Morse outbattled Igor Nikolic 6-4, 6-4 at first singles.

“One thing I thought everybody did really well was they took the first two or three games and really sized up their opponents and made some early adjustments to take control of the first set,” said Capetta. “They were able to continue that strategy throughout the match and I was proud of them for playing so intelligently.”

Court perfection: Back-to-back state Class B titles for Windjammers
Camden Hills bests Yarmouth 5-0 to capture crown at Colby College

WATERVILLE — In its final match before moving up a class, the Camden Hills boys tennis team brought its "A" game to the court on Saturday afternoon, June 10 and that, once again, was bad news for another Class B opponent.

The talented, deep Windjammers finished an unbeaten state Class B championship season with another dominating performance, this time in a 5-0 victory over Yarmouth at Colby College.

Video, additional information and link to more photos from the state match will appear later with this story.

Greely edges Caribou for ‘B’ girls tennis championship

...The Class B contest was by far the closest of the three even though just one match went the maximum three sets.

Greely (15-1) controlled play at the first two singles slots.

Junior Izzy Evans, a quarterfinalist in this year’s state singles playdown, pulled away from Marquis — a Round of 16 singles qualifier — 6-3, 6-1 at first singles. Senior Kathryn Pare then scored a 6-4, 6-1 win over Caribou junior Ashley Matlock in a baseline battle of Round of 16 qualifiers.

But from there the match proved less predictable.

Caribou scored its first point at second doubles, where juniors Danielle Hanson and Ciara Richards defeated Kaitlyn Thompson and Lea Schuepfer.

But the decisive — and clinching — point came at first doubles, where Greely’s Kate Steinberg and Jordan Bryant topped Hailey Holmquist and Conner Spencer 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

Camden Hills cultivates state championship tennis presence

...The back-to-back crowns make Camden Hills the only boys team from the Eastern/North region to win a state tennis championship regardless of class since Lewiston captured the Class A title in 2011.

“We knew Yarmouth would be tough, but we’d been training hard since the beginning of the season, for 10 weeks really, so this is the culmination of a lot of hard work,” Capetta said. “We won in convincing fashion (Saturday), and I think having been here before definitely worked to our advantage.”

The all-senior singles tandem of Morse, Colby Arau and Krul led the way, each winning in straight sets to go with straight-sets victories by the underclass doubles teams of Cooper Russell and Henry Cooper and David Poutasse and Noah Heidorn as the Windjammers capped off a 16-0 season.
