Boys tennis returns to Maranacook after player-driven effort
Program back after push for the sport to return to school's spring offerings.

...Meanwhile, a few towns over, Matt Anderson — Charette’s former coach — thought the same thing after he was unable to start a program at Monmouth Academy.

“I was kind of reserving myself to thinking that maybe it’s not in the cards for the next couple of years,” Anderson said.

The Fort Kent transplants found the solution to their common problem in each other, and they got a bevy of students to join their side. Anderson is the coach and Charette is the No. 1 player for the Maranacook boys tennis team, which is back this year for the first time since 2014.

Mt. Blue heads indoors to improve on skills, bond as a team

...With other spring sports trying to stay warm and also getting their work in indoors, the girls’ tennis team moved off campus and set up shop in the gym at the Academy Hill School in Wilton for the first week of practice.

The Cougars used that time to hone skills, performing standard drills like wall ball and using a ball machine to help the players — especially the seven freshmen — get used to balls coming at them.

“This year was better because Farmington Recreation Department had a middle school session, so I had eight or nine girls in that.” Mt. Blue coach Judy Upham said. “At least they hit some balls (there).”

Shire tennis squads return to action

... Houlton’s squads once again will share a single coach as Nancy Mooers returns for her second full season working with both the Shire boys and girls.

The coach said she was excited for the new season, but knows she has some spots to fill in her lineups due to losses from graduation.

The Houlton girls have qualified for postseason play for two straight years, and coach Mooers said she hopes to continue that trend this spring. The Shires finished 5-7 in the regular season, earning the No. 6 seed in Class C north. Houlton beat No. 11 Madawaska 3-2 in a prelim, but fell to No. 3 Orono 5-0 in the quarterfinals.

The girls roster features senior Rebecca Mooers, the coach’s daughter, as the team’s top singles player. She is a four-year tennis player and held the tough No. 1 singles spot last year as well.

PPH High school tennis preview: Greely girls look to build on recent success
The Rangers are setting their sights on another state title for the school

... This winter, the Rangers won state championships in hockey, indoor track and basketball. And that was just for their girls’ teams. Their boys also earned state titles in basketball and indoor track.

“It’s a winning culture here,” said Ben Caswell, who has guided the Greely girls’ tennis team to three Class B state championships in the past four years. “It’s the culture of having fun, playing for each other. The winning seems to follow.”

This spring, something has been missing from the tennis team’s preseason practices, other than leaves on the courtside trees at Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center or any semblance of green in nearby fairways.
