Nordic skiing: Yarmouth, Maranacook win Sassi Memorial team titles

The Yarmouth girls’ and Maranacook boys’ teams the fastest times and claimed the team titles.

Sophia Laukli of Yarmouth finished the 5-kilometer Classic race in 14:25, a full minute ahead of second-place finisher Olivia Skillings of Maine Coast Waldorf. Laukli didn’t ski last season, so she was eager to test herself against the best in the state.

“I am really happy. I was gone last year so I didn’t know what to expect because I hadn’t raced against a lot of the girls yet this year,” Laukli said. “I was definitely really happy. I tested my skis and they were really fast, so it was a good day.”

Mt. Blue skier Sam Smith a throwback
Cougar junior thrives in both Nordic and alpine ski races.

...Or, there was the time Cyr saw Smith riding the chairlift, the safety bar raised. Smith leaned forward to adjust his boot, barely sitting in the moving chair at all. Every alpine ski racer needs to have very little fear, Cyr said.

“I’d say Sam Smith has no fear,” Cyr said. “There’s nothing he holds back on at all.”

In an age of sports specialization, Smith is sort of a throwback. One of the top alpine skiers in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference, A junior, Smith also competes for Mt. Blue’s Nordic ski team.

“When I think of ski season, I don’t think of one or the other. I think of both. I think it’s very hard to choose between both of them,” Smith said after his second run in a slalom race last Wednesday at Titcomb.

Nordic skiing: Edward Little sees youth movement on the trails

...This year brought a pleasant surprise.

“So I show up at the first meeting and in walk nine freshmen boys,” Cobb said. “I’m like, ‘Oh, ok.’”

All four girls left the team — two graduated, one moved and the last decided against returning — leaving Hiscock and Matt Syphers, a junior who skied his freshman year before taking last season off, as the lone returners.

“In the initial meeting it was like, ‘This could go either way,’” Cobb said. “But, I have to give a lot of credit to (head coach) Gretchen Slover at the middle school. They have a great program down there and they make it fun for the kids. They come and they’ve embraced the sport.”

Mt. Blue's Charles, Deering's Jordan win Oxford Hills Sprints

...“I tried to, on the last one, throw in a little surge on the uphill, and it just happened to work out and I just tried to keep it consistent,” Charles said. “I just tried to stay and whatever happened, happened. I wasn’t expecting how it turned out, I wasn’t expecting that, it was awesome.”

Charles finished the final kilometer race in 4:16.05, barely edging out Eva Clement of Falmouth (4:16.35) and Jenny Wilkerson of Morse (4:16.53) in what was easily the best race of the day. Charles distributed her strength evenly throughout the day, and training at Titcomb Mountain gave Charles the advantage she needed at the end.

“Once you’re on the course, don’t exert too much energy until the last few heats so you can kind of conserve your energy that way,” Charles said. “I know that one of my strengths is going uphills and it’s kind of because where I train, at Titcomb.”

Caribou alpine teams looking forward to having states on home turf

CARIBOU, Me (WAGM) - The Caribou Alpine teams had a slow start to season like everyone else in the area. The Vikings are happy to be competing more regularly now and putting their skills to the test.

"We started off with four meets that got canceled. We were fortunate that Fort Kent was willing to pick up one of those canceled meets and host us up there. You look forward to those weekends where you can get out on the snow and put those skills to test. When those meets aren't there, it's disappointing for the coaches as well as the athletes," said head coach Neal Sleeper.
