CM HS Skiing preview
Maranacook, Mt. Blue look to continue dominant runs.

...“They’re going to be really good,” said Mt. Blue coach Claire Polfus, who returns six girls from last year’s team. “The six girls are incredibly strong.”

Among the returnees are senior Meg Charles, sophomore Gretchen Huish and junior Chelsea Sebold, who finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the classical race at the state meet. The Marancook girls, likewise, return a strong lineup, led by senior Laura Parent, who won the classical race and placed second in freestyle.

“We return a strong girls team with four skiers who skied in the state meet and a number of other solid, experienced skiers who will be pushing to get into the top group,” Maranacook coach Steve DeAngelis said.

Fort Kent nordic ski teams eager to start season

FORT KENT, Me (WAGM) - The Fort Kent Nordic ski teams are looking to have successful seasons again this year. Head coach Carl Theriault told me Niko Naranja would be one to watch on the boys team. He also says that the teams have been fortunate to get on the skis earlier than usual...

Alpine skiing: Phoenix gang's all back, racing for another title

...The Phoenix didn’t add any newcomers this year, so this winter’s team is exactly the same as last winter’s state championship.

“Same seven that I had before,” Spruce Mountain coach Bill Acritelli said. “It’s a true pleasure.”

Furthermore, between the giant slalom and slalom each skier — Allison Acritelli, Madeline Timberlake, Kiarra Richards, Julia Pomeroy, Grace Harmatys, Adria Plourde and Bailey Coates — was part of the scoring in last year’s state championship at Black Mountain.

“It was a total team effort last year,” Acritelli said.

Now the Phoenix will try to match their success, if not surpass it in 2017-18.

“I definitely think we’re going to push ourselves harder to do better than we did last year,” senior Allison Acritelli, the coach’s daughter, said.

Mt. Blue Nordic looks to replace, reload for another title run

...Mt. Blue is in that position this season after Tucker Barber and Julia Ramsey both graduated after winning the 2016 skate and classic Class A championships.

“Julia Ramsey and Tucker Barber were both incredible skiers and both leaders on the team,” Mt. Blue coach Claire Polfus said. “They were technically astute so teammates could follow and learn from them.”

In her third year, Polfus is trying to begin her career with three consecutive state championships. Her Mt. Blue boys’ and girls’ teams have reloaded again this year, both with talent and leadership coming from all directions. With state titles in a row, Polfus is trying to focus on her team, rather than expectations.

“I think by being at Mt. Blue, there’s always some pressure because we have such a long history of skiing in this area,” Polfus said. “I try to coach without pressure. The most important thing about skiing is to improve and have fun.”
