Shiffrin becoming the one to beat in women’s skiing
The American is branching out, and could challenge Lindsey Vonn's records.

...Her downhill win at Lake Louise in early December was a personal breakthrough and sent out a statement: The Olympic and three-time world slalom champion, who has a few wins in giant slalom races, no longer views herself as just a technical specialist.

“I’m finding something new, some more speed,” Shiffrin told The Associated Press in a recent interview. “My positioning, my skiing, my tactics, everything’s coming together. I’m certainly not (just) a slalom skier anymore, I consider myself an all-event skier.”

Her two wins at the French Alpine resort of Courchevel this week – in GS and the inaugural parallel slalom – took her to 35 World Cup wins.

Luger born in Maine finally living the Olympic dream
Emily Sweeney knows the meaning of disappointment. Now she's learning about happiness.

...At long last it’s here.

Olympic gear is coming her way, and it was earned. Sweeney is one of the three women on the team that USA Luge will send to the Pyeongchang Games in February, after clinching her spot earlier this month and ending an eight-year odyssey that had more twists and turns than the ice-coated winding chutes she slides down to make a living.

“It doesn’t feel real,” said Sweeney, who was born in Portland and lived in Falmouth before her family moved to Connecticut in 2003. “I feel exactly the same as I did before.”

Much like a luge track itself, Sweeney’s path to the Olympics has been long, cold, bumpy and treacherous. She lost a race-off for the final spot on the 2010 U.S. Olympic team – to her sister. She missed out again when trying to make the 2014 team for the Sochi Games, doomed in part by injuries. She’s barely a year removed from surgery on a wrist that still gives her problems.

Colby Athletics to host documentary filmmaker Tuesday

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College Department of Athletics and the Pugh Center is sponsoring a day with filmmaker Deborah Riley Draper on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Riley Draper's documentary, Olympic Pride, American Prejudice, explores the experiences of the 18 African American members of the 1936 U.S. Olympic team who competed in the Berlin games.

Riley Draper will spend the day with the Colby community by co-hosting an open class session with Professor Cheryl Gilkes at 10 a.m. in Ostrove, and a reception at 4 p.m. and a film screening at 5 p.m. at Ostrove.

A 2016 Film Independent Lab Fellow, Draper was named to Variety Magazine’s
“2016 Top 10 Documakers to Watch“ list. Olympic Pride, American Prejudice, tells the untold story of 18 African Americans who defied Adolph Hitler and Jim Crow in 1936 and is a 2017 nominee for the NAACP Image Awards Outstanding Documentary – Film and
qualified for the 2017 Oscars race. Draper co-wrote the film’s theme song, “Find
My Victory”, which was eligible for the Oscar for Best Original Song.
