Mt. Blue, Maranacook Nordic shine again after strong seasons
Cougars win boys race at Hornet Classic, while Black Bears win girls event.

TURNER — The Mt. Blue and Maranacook Nordic teams showed their championship form again. And they didn’t need all of their top guns to do it.

The Cougars and Black Bears prevailed at the Hornet Classic at Leavitt Area High School on Saturday morning, doing so by the slimmest of margins. Mt. Blue, led by a fifth-place finish from Isaiah Reid, edged Freeport, 33-34, to take the boys race, while Maranacook (69), Oxford Hills (90) and Leavitt (92) rounded out the top five.

Erratic weather not slowing down weekend Alpine, Nordic ski races
Maranacook coaches, parents work to make sure Nordic course is ready for wave race.

- The Maranacook ave race will go on as scheduled, with or without nature’s help.

- Kents Hill, which is hosting a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and Mountain Valley Conference slalom event.

Warm temperatures don’t slow Mt. Blue, Maranacook Nordic
Cougars and Black Bears thrive in wave race hosted by Maranacook.

READFIELD — The weather was unusual. The format was unique.

The winners, however, were no one new.

Facing slushy snow and high temperatures and prevailing nonetheless, the Mt. Blue and Maranacook Nordic teams skied their ways to first-place finishes at the Maranacook Wave race Saturday morning. The teams claimed the same victories they did at the previous weekend’s Hornet Classic, with Mt. Blue (34 points) taking the boys race ahead of Maranacook (41), Oxford Hills (52), Central Maine Ski Club (103) and Leavitt (122), while Maranacook (32) finished first in the girls race just ahead of the Cougars (34) and in front of Gould Academy (51), CMSC (86) and Maine Coast (104)

Leavitt, Gould win Oxford Hills Classic

NORWAY — Lest any of the competitors at Wednesday's Oxford Hills Classic 5k at Roberts Farm Preserve think it would serve as a good warm-up for Saturday's prestigious Sassi Memorial, Oxford Hills junior Cameron Bancroft says they might want to think again.

"(The Sassi course) is kind of the opposite of this," he said. "Instead of all up and then all down it's all down followed by all up. And it's definitely High School Hill that everyone thinks of when it comes to the Sassi."

Oxford Hills' home course doesn't have anything to equal the iconic climax of the Sassi course at Black Mountain. The competitive field is also a fraction of the size of the Sassi, which annually draws about two dozen schools from around the state.

Ashland Ski team is very young

The Ashland cross country ski team is very young this year. They have seven underclassmen on the boys and girls team. The girls are young but all have varsity experience
(Linda Milligan):"We had four compete for us last year we have three sophomores and a junior and they all have improved so I am happy about that."
