Biathletes vying for North American honors in Fort Kent

FORT KENT, Maine — Nearly 80 athletes of all levels, from master skiers to 13-year-old first-time competitors from America and Canada, are expected to participate in the 2016 North American and U.S. Biathlon Championships this week at the Fort Kent Outdoor Center.

The spectator-friendly venue is hosting its seventh such championship for the sport that combines cross-country ski racing with target shooting.

Most members of the U.S. national team who competed in the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia and the World Cup Biathlon last month in Presque Isle will be in Fort Kent this week, according to Carl Theriault, one of the organizers.

Biathlon sprint races in Aroostook County

Biathletes compete in sprint races, skiing three laps and shooting twice at targets — once from a standing position and once prone — during the opening day on Thursday, March 24, of the 2016 North American and U.S. Biathlon Championships at the Fort Kent Outdoor Center.

Cape Elizabeth native Clare Egan on track for Winter Olympics debut
Clare Egan hopes to compete for the U.S. in biathlon next February in South Korea.

...Then again, Egan has a master’s degree in linguistics and precision comes in handy in her line of work, which involves shooting small targets with a .22-caliber rifle.

She can speak five languages and is learning a sixth, Korean. That will come in handy next February if, as expected, she finds herself in PyeongChang for the 2018 Winter Olympics as a member of the U.S. Biathlon Team.

“In some ways, it’s hard to believe that it’s here already,” Egan said of the Olympic training cycle that began last month. “In other ways, it’s hard to believe that it’s the 2018 Olympics we’re talking about.”
