The US’s best moguls skier is from Maine, and his sights are set on the Olympics

...At the last event of the season, he wore bib No. 6. A season of consistent performances helped Murphy, who is from Bethel, Maine, and learned to ski in New England, rocket up the leaderboard.

He is now the top-ranked moguls skier in the United States, and as the qualifying season begins this weekend ahead of the Olympics in PyeongChang, his coach expects even better things.

Winter Olympics to exclude Russia, as punishment for doping
Russian athletes will be able to participate, but not as representatives of their nation.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Russian athletes will be allowed to stand on the medal podium at the Winter Olympics – just not with their anthem playing or their nation’s flag rising above them.

The International Olympic Committee barred Russia and the its sports leaders from the upcoming games in South Korea after its lead investigator concluded members of the Russian government concocted a doping scheme at the 2014 Sochi Games that “caused unprecedented damage to Olympism and to sports.”

Not welcome in Pyeongchang next year will be any sign of the Russian Olympic Committee or any member of its sports ministry, which was responsible for what investigators concluded was a top-to-bottom scheme of “manipulation and cheating” to ensure Russians could dope at the Olympics on their home turf and not get caught.

The IOC punishment did leave room for many Russians to compete under the name “Olympic Athlete from Russia” or OAR. They would have to pass drug tests to prove they were clean and also did not benefit from the Sochi scheme.

Lindsey Vonn suffers back injury in World Cup race

...On Saturday, Vonn crossed the finish line in obvious distress, almost one second behind the then-leader, and slumped to the snow.

Vonn's tentative run after jarring her back early on placed her 24th, trailing 1.56 seconds behind the surprise winner, Jasmine Flury of Switzerland. The race was shortened due to strong winds higher up the mountain.

Vonn stayed in the finish house to be treated, and one hour later limped slowly into a waiting car to be driven from the St. Moritz course.

Leeds native Carey coaching Paralympic skiers in Pyeongchang

...After graduating from Leavitt Area High School, Carey skied and captained the Dartmouth College Nordic team, but her career was derailed by hip and back injuries. After college in New Hampshire she moved to Colorado to coach at a boarding school before moving back to Maine to coach at what is now the Outdoor Sport Institute.

There, Carey was introduced to biathlon. The sport is a mix of skiing and marksmanship — a stark contrast from the all-out nature of Nordic skiing. Paralympic biathletes have to shoot at a 13-millimeter target from 10 meters away incrementally throughout their race.

“It’s a really fascinating sport because in skiing it’s so physical and you’re pushing the body to the limit,” Carey said. “In biathlon, you have to stop and have the ability to be precise and it takes mental fortitude, so that dynamic is really interesting from a physical aspect of skiing to biathlon.”

After leaving the Institute in 2010, the New England Nordic Ski Association needed a coach that had experience. Through that opportunity, Carey found herself coaching with the national team here and there, and in 2015 was named the head coach of the U.S. Paralympic Ski Team.

Russian athletes not in favor of Olympic boycott
Individuals who are invited to participate in the Winter Games under a neutral flag plan to compete.

...Sofia Velikaya said the Russian Olympic Committee’s athletes’ commission, which she chairs, has heard from “all the athletes in all sports” on the Olympic program, with a majority in favor of competing.

Velikaya said no athletes have told the ROC they would rather boycott.

“At the current moment, everyone’s training and everyone’s hoping to take part in the Olympics,” Velikaya said.

The International Olympic Committee last week barred the Russian team from Pyeongchang because of doping offenses at the 2014 Sochi Games, but individual athletes who are cleared to participate can compete under a neutral flag as “Olympic Athletes from Russia.”
