Oceanside holds on in Class B North semifinals
The Mariners survive a last-minute flurry to defeat Morse, 10-9.

...“We came into the game real nervous because we had already lost to them twice, but we were ready to put up a fight,” said Jillian Brooks, who led the Mariners with four goals.

“The key was that we played well as a team today, and our midfield passing was good,” Oceanside Coach Angela Vachon said. “We’ve been working in practice on sharper passes. To Morse’s credit, we tried to emulate them because they are an exceptionally good team.”

The Mariners (12-2) led 6-4 at halftime, then gradually pulled away.

'Fantastic' effort propels Oceanside past Cony earlier in Class B North playoffs

... "It was a well-balanced scoring effort, along with relentless defense and the save of the game from Elise Laslavic, with 18 seconds to play, that made history for the Lady Mariner lacrosse team today," Vachon said. "The Mariners knew going in that it would not be a cake walk."

The coach said Morse came out of a timeout to score three unanswered goals in the final two minutes, to edge closer, but that is when Laslavic came up big and "kept her team on the winning side and away from overtime play" with the save her high school career.

"Our midfield and full offensive end had elite-style passing around the eight-meter today from start to finish and Jillian Brooks made easy work of Morse’s goalie with one of her goals being a very quick reverse, come-from-behind, left-side-of-the-cage shot.

Yarmouth girls overcome sluggish start, steamroll St. Dom's in semifinals

YARMOUTH—If you’re a visiting team trying to upset the undefeated Yarmouth girls’ lacrosse team, getting an early lead is paramount and if you can keep the prolific Clippers off the scoreboard for 10 minutes, even better.

The fifth-ranked Saints of St. Dominic Academy managed to control the early portion of its Class B North semifinal at top-ranked Yarmouth Saturday afternoon, as junior standout Caroline Gastonguay scored two goals and the Saints held a 2-0 lead, but a promising start was quickly wiped out by the Clippers Express, who turned a two-goal deficit into a commanding six-goal advantage by halftime.

After junior Meredith Lane broke the ice with 15:02 remaining in the first half, senior Molly Wilson and junior Eva Then followed with goals in rapid succession to put Yarmouth on top to stay.

Kennebunk rallies to defeat Falmouth for Class B South title
The Rams return to the state championship game after a 9-6 win over Falmouth.

...“They have a really good defense so it was definitely hard to find the holes or where their weak spot was,” said Leah Dumas, who scored two goals in the second half for Kennebunk.

“Once we were able to relax at halftime, we were able to reset and finally able to find the holes.”

Katherine Koch drove through the Yachtsmen for a score, closing to 5-4 with 23:35 left. Five minutes later, Dumas rolled around the crease and shot, tying the game.

Yarmouth makes it five in a row
The Clippers win another Class B North title with an 18-2 victory over Oceanside.

...For the third straight spring, Yarmouth will meet Kennebunk (12-2) for the state championship. The game will be held Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

“We’ve been practicing really hard and our goal this season was to get back to the state final,” said Yarmouth Coach Dorothy Holt.

“These girls have worked so hard for this – in the heat, in the rain – all year, so today was just trying to take care of business.”

Kennebunk and Yarmouth square off in Class B for the third year in a row.

...“It’s going to be a close game,” Yarmouth Coach Dorothy Holt said. “We’re closely matched.”

Both teams feature balanced attacks. For Kennebunk, Gabby Fogg, Hallie Schwartzman and Erin Groton lead an offense that includes Katherine Koch, Briannagh Beaudette, Leah Dumas and Mia Banglmaier.

“It will be the little things in this game that make the difference – the (fewest) turnovers, good shots and 50 minutes of smart play,” said Kennebunk Coach Annie Barker. “The Kennebunk girls are well prepared and ready to have fun.”
